Santa's Secrets Applied All Year Long!

Occasionally, a book comes along that presents leadership concepts in a new and exciting way. That's exactly what these authors have done. I was hooked from the introduction and didn't quit reading until I finished the closing thoughts. I still find myself picking it up again and again.
I was impressed by how practical Santa's advice was throughout this book. The ideas can be applied immediately and the book provides plenty of material to keep on giving.
Some people may think, "This is a good idea for the holidays" even though the sub-title hints it's going to be useful all year long. It didn't take many pages to convince me this is isn't just a holiday book -- Santa's secrets apply to every day throughout the whole year. I strongly recommend this book for all types of settings.

Bailyn, prize-winning Harvard historian (Pulitzer, Bancroft, National Book Award), is writing a multivolume interpretive history of the transatlantic movement of people from Europe to America between 1500 and the Industrial Revolution. This volume, which introduces the series, will be followed by Voyages to the West announced for publication in the fall. Despite the outpouring of specialized studies, Bailyn notes, the transatlantic movement of some 50 million people remains a blur, a story without structure and scale. He shows how the findings of diverse scholars will be brought together in his series by following several lines of interpretation: that migration was an extension of European domestic mobility; led to the creation of widely varying American urban settlements; and (fired by labor needs and land speculation) gave rise by the early 18th century to an America that was a "ragged outer margin" of British culture. Peopling of British North America: An Introduction.
Surely one of the most important studies of the vast movement of immigrants to the New World is Bernard Bailyn's The Peopling of British North America: An Introduction. In a nuanced thesis regarding the motivations for promoting movement of large numbers of people to the American wilderness, he also shows how long-held traditions with regard to land ownership and tenantry were transformed in America, due largely to the new environment. Bailyn argues that after the "initial phase of colonization, the major stimuli to population recruitment and settlement were...the continuing need for labor, and...land speculation." The land speculation of the 17th and 18th centuries, Bailyn argues, "shaped a relationship between the [land] owners and the workers of the land different from that which prevailed in Europe." (60) Bailyn writes that land speculation was common in America among all classes of men, "a major preoccupation of ambitious people...launched as a universal business." (67) But with all of this pervasive land accumulation came an indispensable caveat; speculators needed settlers to populate the land they claimed, so that an owner could rent or sell his property. "Land speculation was, and remained, boundless, ubiquitous," (74) writes Bailyn, who goes on to describe the various schemes and methods speculators used "to people the land they claimed." (69) Yet as Bailyn points also out, long-held, customary tenancy relationships that British landowners were used to were not adaptable to America. Instead, new methods were needed to attract settlers and clear the land, so that property in the trackless wilderness would become useable, and as a result, valuable. Bailyn argues that, unlike tenancy norms in Britain or Ireland, speculators had to let the land out at very low rates (or none at all) in an attempt to attract settlers who would in turn make improvements on the property themselves, with their own labor. "The land would have a new value and could then be rented profitably or sold...all of this with little or no outlay of funds." (82) This innovative model was quite attractive to migrants, Bailyn concludes, who were free to chose upon which speculator's land to settle, and which lands to avoid. In America, gone were the services tenants typically performed in the old country, rent increases and the caprice of landlords. Bailyn goes on to suggest as well that unlike property limitations in Britain, land in the colonies was "too easily available" and mobility too common among settlers for tenancy to develop permanently, or to "make possible a re-creation of the stable pattern of rentiers that lay at the heart of a traditional landed society." New tenancy and ownership patterns "reveal a new and dynamic process that was a central force in the peopling of America." (84-85)

Brief Introduction to Promising "Voyagers to the West"

This is a brief introduction to Bailyn's highly regarded "Voyagers to the West". The book is, as it states, a serious of transcribed lectures that Bailyn delivered to college undergrads. You can tell that these are lectures, but Bailyn has provided ample footnoting at the back of the book.

Understand that this is a short book. It should only take about a couple of hours (maybe less) to read. "Voyagers to the West" runs about 800 pgs, so you'd probably want to read this before that, just to make sure this is what you are interested in.

Bailyn uses four "propositions" to frame the themes of his lectures. The propositions boil down to the idea that the received wisdom we have about the peopling of the British colonies in America is wrong and that the process was more complex then we thought. I would refer those unfamiliar with this approach (that of framing "propostions" for historical inquiry), to the work of the Annales school in France (Marc Bloch, Phillipe Aries, etc).

Fans of David Hackett Fischer's "Albion's Seed" will want to check this one out.

an elegant little classic

It's unusual for an academic history book to be spellbinding, but this one is. Bailyn's slim, elegant volume contains three lectures (originally given at the University of Wisconsin and in other venues) on immigration and demography in early America. Bailyn argues that immigration from Europe to North America is best understood as an extension of the pre-existing patterns of local and long-distance migration within medieval and early modern Europe. In the final lecture, "A Domesday Book for the Periphery," Bailyn further argues that the diverse and disorderly culture of early America is best understood as a "marchland" (112) of European civilization. The lectures are studded with intriguing data and specific, moving examples. If you want to do in-depth research on this topic, you will need to read Bailyn's longer work, Voyagers to the West, but the ample footnotes in this volume will be enough to get you started on further reading. Truly a classic in the field.

What a sick guy he was

When I read this book I was amazed that some one like Sam DeStefano accualy lived in this would at one time. He was a very scary and sick man. The rest of the book really showed what it is like to live as a mobster and be involved with the "juice" rackets. This was a good book! The information in it is amazing. It's not like other mob books, it's really hard to believe the things these mobsters did. If you want to know what it was like to be in the mob, I recommend this book!

Austrian Ariane Cap is a bassist, pianist, educator, author, blogger, writer and composer living in California. Not just for bass players!

Music Theory for the Bass Player is going to rock your world! Ariane is a well respected teacher and an accomplished musician who has tackled a tough subject -- music theory. What makes her book unique is her approach to guiding you to understand music theory first. Most books start with teaching you how to read music, then immediately jump into theory. This approach works well as a refresher for the musician that already reads, but for the musician who doesn't read music notation already, it is almost impossible to learn to read musical notation AND music theory at the same time. More than one student has tried one of these music theory books and thrown up their hands in frustration saying "I can't understand music theory!" That's just not the case! What they can't do is wade through the complex subject of musical notation and trying to understand how music works at the same time. This book relies on fretboard diagrams more than on notation and has you think things through yielding a deeper and more organic understanding of how music works. There are fun exercises and quizzes to guide you along. This book is for bass players, but it is an approach that works for all instruments. We learn to talk before we learn to read and write, same thing should apply for music. This book is an essential book for bass players, and Ariane's approach to teaching theory is one that I hope will be adopted for the sake of all those frustrated musicians out there that are convinced they'll never understand music theory. A must have!

Excellent book! I’ve bought lots of books and DVDs but this is the ONE to have! The chapters are arranged logically as is the information inside the chapters. Information is clearly presented. Exercises are well designed and followed by quizzes.

It starts with the notes, then the fret board, and next each interval in detail. You should use the book with your bass so you hear the exercises as you practice. It included mnemonic devices. There is a chapter on posture so you can position yourself and play in a relaxed manner not cramped up.

Ariane plans to offer a free practice syllabus at arisbassblog.com.

You can know theory in your brain but better to know it in your fingers and know it so well you can use it in musical situations.

Cutting a Clear and Easy to Follow Path Toward Fretboard Mastery!

This is one great book! If you are serious about learning bass, even as a hobbyist bassist like me, this a a wonderful book to not only educate your brain, but to educate your hands as well. The book is logically laid out with narrative, exercises, practice suggestions and tests that help you move step by step through mastering your fret board.

I can't say enough great things about this book! The test questions are often brain teasers designed to make you think about the information you just covered. And you have to THINK and not just parrot what was on the previous few pages.

If you are willing to make a reasonable effort to follow this book you will end up a much better bassist and musician.

Delightful Illustrated Guide to Growing Bamboo

Before Michael Bell's book, "The Gardener's Guide to Growing Temperate Bamboos," was published early in 2000, for many years "Bamboos" by Christine Recht and Max Wetterwald was the only fully color photo illustrated volume on growing and landscaping with bamboo that was readily available in the United States. Originally translated from the German, it remains one of the best guides not only for the excellent photographs but also for the charming text. "Bamboos" has sections on bamboo types (clumping and running) and basic morphology, practical chapters on how to plant, care for and limit the growth of bamboo, an encyclopedic section listing bamboos by species, qualities, climate, and requirements, and specialist chapters on such niceties as growing bamboo in containers and using them in bonsai. There are a couple of captions in the book that are applied to the wrong photographs, and some of the information given is occasionally contradicted in newer texts, as knowledge of this wonderful plant continues to evolve. However, these differences are very minor and do not detract from the value of this book, which remains a solid reference for identifying and growing bamboos. It is a visually beautiful book as well, useful for looking up pictures of the different types of bamboo while going through a mail-order nursery's catalog of available plants, and for imagining how different types might complement your garden, terrace or patio. For anyone who is even thinking about planting bamboo, this book is essential reading.

Bamboo's

Still one of the most visual works on bamboo, originally translated from a German book, "Bamboo"s, by Christine Recht & Max F. Wetterwald, is wonderfully filled with color pictures of many bamboo species, and the black and white drawings are very clear, especially in explaining the paticulars of both running, and non invasive varieties. The individual description's are compact, yet informative, leaving room for a large volume of cultivars, with a general introduction to each type first. I counted more than 85 species, 34 of which are the popular Phyllostachys. The book is of good manufacture, and my hardback is still in great shape.

IMPORTANT NOTE! Many sellers on Amazon (and even in bookstores) are confusing a cheaper version of the Book of Mormon replica with ours. The one published by Herald House (of Independence, Missouri) sells for $23.95 and has a hardback cover made with paper exterior, which some people think is leather (because of the color). However, our version, at only $11 more, is the ONLY VERSION THAT IS BOUND WITH REAL LEATHER. 3 reasons why our version is more like the original: 1) The LEATHER COVER, as stated. 2) The THICK COVER, which only ours has, and 3) The "EUROPEAN JOINT," which allows the cover to lay flat all the way to the spine and is much costlier to produce. (The other version, with its "modern joint," has a large, deep groove which you can readily see along the left side.) Beautifully done!

The binding: This is an original size reproduction of the 1830 first edition of the Book of Mormon. The binding is beautiful and first-rate, something one doesn't usually see in books anymore. The pages are folded and sewn and the binding is in a traditional manner with open space between the back of the sewn-together pages and the inside spine of the cover - just like real hardcovers used to have. The cover itself is a very nice high-quality grain leather with gold trim. From the outside, this book is probably nicer to have than an original would be. It is a joy to hold and a delight to read.

The inside: This is a photo-reproduction of a first edition, so there is some loss of quality. There is also some curvature distortion to the text, as if the pages were not completely flattened when they were reproduced. The blotch on page 226 that another reviewer mentioned is present, but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book (also see this product's "customer images" section for a photo of this). The inside is not perfect, but it is probably the best that could be created without damaging the spine of an original first edition.

The content: This is the original version of the Book of Mormon, as it was intended to be seen, without any of the editorial changes, passage rewrites, or other adjustments that have been made over the course of the last 150 years. I prefer reading the original versions of things like "Pilgrim's Progress," "The Song of Hiawatha," and other older works; so I really appreciated this aspect of the book.

Also, in this version of the BOM, there were not yet any chapter summaries, no verse numbers nor verse spacings, and no footnotes. The book is arranged in the traditional style of a novel and the original 1800s spellings are also present.

This is the next-best thing to a "real" first edition, complete with all of the 1830 indicia and a preface by "The Author" explaining about the loss of the Book of Lehi.

Beautiful product, timely delivery

I bought this replica for inclusion in a university display about the printing of the Book of Mormon, although the binding isn't period (a good thing since it wouldn't hold together long if it was!), I'm very happy with what it adds to the display. This book was obviously crafted with great attention to detail.

Great representation of American History

While I am not Mormon, I did like this edition of the Book of Mormon as it represents a part of American history. The pages are nice and thick, the binding has the orginal rings underneath so as to prolong the life of the spine, and even the pages are sometimes faded or the text is smuged just like what you would expect to find from a 19th century ink press. I think anyone, both the faithful and the book collector will be pleased by the presentation of this fine book.

Great general reference text for land development

After having this textbook in Dion's class 20+ years ago, I find myself still using this book as reference on a regular basis. Not sure of the reviews that state it is dry reading, since it is a textbook, and I use it for reference, I don't really see it as a pleasure read. I haven't seen too many (or any) technical texts that weren't dry. It is frequently borrowed by the other engineers in the office. Great general reference text for land development. Actually looked it up on Amazon, just to see its availability when one of the other engineers said they wished they had a copy of their own.

This book gives a useful overview of the land development process

This book gives a useful overview of the land development process, but its vague on specifics and includes almost no guidance on design. Also, the text is dry, offers few examples, and often doesn't seem to follow the chapter headings. I would pass on this book. There are other books with more detail and that cost significantly less than this one. If you're a student, consider buying a cheap used copy, and then sell it when the class is over. You won't need it much after school.

Decent, but Boring

This book was required for my Civil Engineering senior design class. The book went into a lot of detail and explained a lot about the entire process of land development, but it was also boring. We hated it because we were all Structural and Construction student, not land development. I think an engineer in land development might like this book.
