The Essential Victor Hugo (Oxford World's Classics), by Victor Hugo

'To the English, I am "shocking"...What's more, French, which is disgusting; republican, which is abominable; exiled, which is repulsive; defeated, which is infamous. To top it all off, a poet...'

Victor Hugo dominated literary life in France for over half a century, pouring forth novels, poems, plays, and other writings with unflagging zest and vitality. Here, for the first time in English, all aspects of his work are represented within a single volume. Famous scenes from the novels Notre-Dame, Les Misérables, and The Toilers of the Sea are included, as well as excerpts from his intimate diaries, poems of love and loss, and scathing denunciations of the political establishment. All the chosen passages are self-contained and can be enjoyed without any previous knowledge of Hugo's work. Much of the material is appearing in English for the first time, and most of it has never before been annotated thoroughly in any language.

Great Book - The Kindle version appears not to be as complete as the hard copy
By Eric Schramm
I purchased the Kindle version. The book is a great study guide that follows the class. I would give the book 5 stars - however - the Kindle version of the book is not complete. For example, there are study guides that are accessible via a web site. To access the guides, you need to refer to the back of the book for a code. The Kindle version does not have this (or I could not locate it). I have sent one of the authors an email to see if I could access the guide but have not heard back.

Descent Study Guide
By Mimyr
I found this to be a good study guide, in combination with other resources. The book was much too short and light on some topics to be your only source for the exam. Practical experience and a firm knowledge of all topics, especially encryption and the TCP, IP, and UDP protocols are a must.

Good book as a supplemental study guide
By Rob53
This book was ok. It should not be used as the Primary study guide for the exam. I used the All-In-One CEH study guide by Matt Walker which I felt did a much better job explaining in detail the topics. The Official review guide however did go into a few areas that the Walker's book omitted, which is ok because the version I took didn't cover them anyway. Overall, the book is ok but I would only use this as a supplementary study guide to another form of studying.

Whoever seeks life, this is their wealth. For the world's rest is false, and its gold and silver are deceptive.
By John E. Hart
For the title of this review I chose an excerpt from "The Dialogue of the Savior" which belonged to NHC III,5. On my quest to better understanding 'gnosticism' I first read Andrew Phillip Smith's book titled, "The Gnostics". His brief treatise on the overall scope of what gnosticism is really all about provided me with a more concise understanding of this exhaustive, scholarly translation of the Nag Hammadi text.

This book is by far the most complete and in-depth translation to date and will probably never be equaled. Scholars such as Marvin Meyer, Elaine Pagels, Madeleine Scopello, Einar Thomassen and John D. Turner are just a few of the names involved with the translation of the Nag Hammadi scriptures. There is an array of backgrounds involved which ultimately provide very different interpretations of the text, but this diversity only helps the reader to draw his/her own conclusions as to interpretation.

One positive aspect to this book is decision NOT to guess what the translation might have been. Quite frankly, much of the text within certain tractates were severely damaged and/or missing. Instead of guessing or including what the text may have said, Meyer and others, merely let the reader know that much of the text itself is missing. This is, of course refreshing, as many modern translations of either other Gnostic or Essene texts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, authors will simply insert modern lexicons assuming that it follows suit to what we have today. Meyer and company don't do this, instead they provide a well documented, heavily footnoted, scholarly work. On many occasions, they provide un-biased opinions of certain words and supply the several meanings to what the word could have meant, allowing for the reader themselves to feel as if they are partaking in the translation.

Many of the text can be deciphered as being either Sethian or Valentinian (the names of the two 'truly' gnostic Christian sects). In the beginning of each tractate, an in-depth analysis of the text is provided, supplying interpretation and the dating of the text as well as to the importance of each.

One such text that doesn't perceive to have an origin is the Gospel of Thomas. It has no markers of being either Sethian or Valentinian and as some scholars have suggested, could very well be the 'Q' source that the Synoptic Gospels themselves are based off of. This is by far a minority viewpoint, but nevertheless, an intriguing claim.

This is a must have treatise to any library and it is clear that the Gnostics were well ahead of their time concerning "gnosis," or knowledge, they had achieved with interpretation of the scriptures, something they felt no one else had.

Being in the gnosis...
By FrKurt Messick
This book finds an honoured place on my shelves, next to the older edition of the Nag Hammadi scriptures assembled under the direction of James M. Robinson, who provides the preface (and much underlying research). According to Robinson, `The Nag Hammadi Scriptures is a collection of thirteen papyrus codices - bound books, not scrolls - that were buried near the city of Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt most likely in the second half of the fourth century CE.' The texts contained here are a fascinating collection, bringing to light literally dozens of texts that had previously been unknown for over a millennium, although about ten of them are in such fragmentary form that it still cannot be said that these have been recovered. It is supposed by many scholars that this is a collection that was buried by Gnostics, but this is not without controversy.

This text has as a leader over the title the phrase `The International Edition', for good reason. There have been three different projects, one in English, one in French, and one in German, over the past generation, the fruits of which have been brought together here in one volume. The representatives from each team are James M. Robinson, Wolf-Peter Funk, and Paul-Hubert Poirier, for the English, German, and French research projects respectively. The introduction is provided by Marvin Meyer and Elaine Pagels, both names known to people who study Gnostic and early biblical texts.

In the introduction, Meyers and Pagels offer the caution that the title `Nag Hammadi Scriptures' cannot imply a canon of scriptures similar to the Bible or Quran - these are texts that were less a sacred (and closed) collection and more of a general gathering of pieces that were considered inspired and inspirational. The original language of the texts is Coptic, although these may have been translated originally from Greek.

Coptic is the Egyptian language written with the Greek alphabet; there are different dialects of Coptic, and the Nag Hammadi library shows at least two. They were found in codex form (book form rather than scroll form), discovered in the mid 1940s, just a few years prior to the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls (another reason for the combination of the texts in the public imagination). However, even this discovery led to others - there was an earlier find that made its way to Berlin (rather like the earlier `Dead Sea Scroll' that had been found in Cairo), and a third collection discovered in the 1970s, and passed from hand to hand until retrieved by scholars (now known as the Codex Tchacos).

Included in these texts are The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Truth, The Gospel of Mary and other gospel contenders (alas, in fragmentary form--this edition carries as much of the text in translation as was recovered). The Gospel of Thomas has perhaps been the highest profile text from Nag Hammadi; it has been translated and commented upon extensively, particularly in modern scholarship which discusses gospel development. The most recent `star' among the non-canonical gospels is the Gospel of Judas, the publication of which Meyer was involved in not long ago (taken for the first time from the Codex Tchacos discovery).

Some of the texts were known by title prior to the discovery of these manuscripts - some titles were found on heretical texts lists, and yet, the idea of heresy is a slippery one, which the authors discuss in context of the non-canonical gospels and texts found in the collection that still had a following within early Christian communities.

For purposes of scholarship, there are limitations to this volume. `As in Nag Hammadi Deutsche, here also only Coptic page numbers are given, and not line numbers from the manuscripts. The Nag Hammadi Scriptures is not presented as an edition of Coptic manuscripts but a publication of texts in English translation, and for this reason the continuation of the use of references based upon line numbers in Coptic manuscripts seems inappropriate.' There are, however, generous notes and references that can provide much of what the average and even scholarly reader will need save for those few specialists who will no doubt know how to use this information to go further.

As an epilogue after the texts, there are four essays that discuss the different ideas within the scholarly community about the texts and Gnosticism more generally. Some have proposed abandoning the term as inappropriate (or too vague to be useful), and others follow the lead of Ireneaus, who apparently used the terms to describe certain groups as they themselves had used it in self-reference.

This is a fascinating text, useful for those who want more insight into the kinds of spiritual writing that were circulating in addition to the canonical scriptures of the early Christians. This also provides information about what the early Christians were reacting to - and opens up new possibilities of interpretation of early Christian history and practice.

All the writings in one volume
By Aeryck S. De Sade
This is an updated release of a wonderful collection of the Gnostic writings that were found in Nag Hammadi in Egypt.

Unlike the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Gnostic writings were ones that the church tried to destroy all remnants of, so as to not allow the common person to understand that a clergy class was not needed, or even meant to exist, according to the teachings of Jesus.

Over the centuries, the teachings of the Gnostics have endured through oral tradition, sometimes at great peril to those people keeping the stories, by such means of the church as damning them as heretics and killing them. No other works of early Christianity has ever been more controversial and no other writings have the early church tried so hard to dispose of, and the followers as well, as were the Gnostic writings.

When these writings were found in 1945, it brought together so many fragments from centuries of speculation and oral tradition. Obscure passages in the modern Bible that reference things unknown were finally brought to light as to their meaning, because the actual words of these texts are what was being referenced, yet hidden for so long.

This book compiles the writings in a complete volume, more complete that any other book ever has, of all the known fragments and complete works of the Gnostic scriptures. These writings are more complete in the actual first person teachings of Jesus among his disciples than even the Bible has kept, and show a picture that would have changed early Christianity forever if it would have been allowed the light of day by the church priests that sought to have them forever hidden.

The author of many books on typography, Dan X. Solo is also the proprietor of his own typography shop in Oakland, California — an establishment dedicated to unusual typography and special effects. This comprehensive catalog offers graphic designers a dazzling selection of over 4,000 typefaces and optical effects available from Solotype Typographers.
Here, in Solo's words, is "a great cast of characters" — the alphabet — abetted by a cornucopia of typographical ideas and an endless resource of letters, words, phrases, slogans, logos, humorous comments, headlines, and graphic symbols. Individual sections of the book display a rich variety of typefaces in categories such as Condensed, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Rustic, Thick-and-tin, Calligraphic, Uncials, Latins, and Blackletter.
Samples are imaginatively presented. "Stagecoach," for example, is printed in Fargo typeface, evoking dusty trails, rawhide, and ten-gallon hats, while "Sizzling summer savings" appears appropriately in the flamboyant Firebug typeface. All typefaces are indexed for quick and easy reference. As entertaining as it is practical and useful, this impressive treasury of versatile typefaces and optical effects will be indispensable to busy commercial artists as an inexhaustible source of typographic ideas and a "swipe file" of words, phrases, and letters for use in graphic art projects.

A MUST for anyone who loves typography!
By Fun with Toys
Dan Solo's book has the most beutiful fonts I've seen. He has a love of typography, and this comes out not just in the quality and number of fonts, but in the manner they are presented. I did my wedding invites with these fonts, and keep looking for reasons to bring back such beautiful typefaces as Nicholas Cochin, or authentic Gold Rush era such as Smuggler, French Kate, and Lyons Egyptian.

this is a great book to get really inspired
By A Customer
this is a great book to get really inspired and makes to instantly want to create something beatifull with it. Only problem is to get it in your computer system (digitalize it) which takes me about one hour for most headline fonts which don't need so much car

Wow! What a Nice Collection of Type!
By Vista Bill Raley
I received my Solotype Catalog today and it was beyond anything I expected! I have worked with type for over 60 years and this is a wonderful collection of type and includes the colorful 19th Century fonts as well as recent fonts (to 1992). Special effects are well presented. This book is a must for anyone interested in type and letterforms.

From the Publisher
One of the first steps an engineer takes in his transition from student to practicing engineer is to take and pass the Engineer-in-Training examination (sometimes called the EIT or Engineering Fundamentals exam). Written by two renowned engineering educators and professionals, this is a comprehensive source of information relevant to this examination and its contents. Outlines the examination, its structure and technical content. Each examination subject area is methodically reviewed; problems and step-by-step solutions follow. Will assist engineers in preparing for careers as productive engineering professionals.

From the Inside Flap
This book was designed to serve one very important, primary function: to help you prepare for and pass the EIT exam. Modeled on the format of the 1991 revised EIT exam and including more solved problems than any other manual in the field, it puts every possible resource at your disposal. Its authors are registered engineers and educators with years of experience in preparing students for the EIT exam, and they have made every effort to produce the most straightforward, concise and, above all, user-friendly guide possible, without skimping on important information. Engineer-In-Training Examination Review begins with a thorough discussion of the structure and technical content of the exam. Each of the subsequent eleven chapters focuses on one major topic covered in the exam and begins with a short review of the fundamental principles that are both conceptually important and practical. Principles are presented compactly and directly—detailed derivations are avoided—and each is supported by examples of its practical applications. The remainder of each chapter comprises multiple choice problems (generously complemented with diagrams and illustrations) modeled on those found in recent EIT exams. And, unlike other review manuals, Engineer-in-Training Examination Review provides the solutions to all of the 550 problems given-that means you avoid the added expense of a separate solution manual. Acknowledged as a standard in the field for over 20 years, this new Third Edition has been completely updated and expanded to provide you with a full arsenal of information and test-taking strategies. Now including chapters on computer programming, structure of matter and materials science, and including more problems and their solutions than any other manual available, Engineer-In-Training Examination Review is the best, most economical resource for anyone preparing for the EIT exam.

A great way to study for the EIT in a little time
By A Customer
I found this book much easier to study from that that big EIT book that is so famous. There are short derivations of equations and many example problems. The economics section was especially helpful for those who never studies economics in college. And best of all: This book helped me pass the EIT with just one month of studying! This book is a handy resource in the working world also.

Review
"Clearly lays out the vast diversity of transformative programs available to any student while also providing an essential compass, and makes a compelling case on how this legitimate educational supplement could soon become an educational imperative."
?Alex Safos, director, Global Learning Across Borders

"With a thorough directory of organizations, an explanation of the financial picture, comments from top college admissions directors, and an objective perspective, Kristin M. White has created the number one gap year resource."
?Chris Stakich, co-founder and executive director, Thinking Beyond Borders

"A good choice for students with the means and broad perspective necessary to consider this experience." (Library Journal, February 2010)

"Whatever your motivation, if you are interested in pursuing a gap year experience, do your research. And I'd start by reading White's book." (CBS MoneyWatch.com, The College Solution)

"This guide's best feature is its clear and detailed organization by subject interest. If a marine life program is calling out to a teen, it is easy to find options and related subjects close by. Though the "gap year" is a relatively new concept in the United States, it is quite common in Europe and Australia. The directories of volunteer and for-credit gap year programs are pure gold. An index and resource list are included." (School Library Journal, "Choosing the Right College" January 27, 2010)

A Good Introduction to Gap Year Programs
By Kristine I. Hintz
Kristin White's book is a good introduction to gap year programs. It offers great discussion of why and how to do a program, how to pay for it, and a full directory of different categories of programs.

This book is a user-friendly start to the process of identifying the menu of gap programs out there. Many students interested in gap programs simply go on the internet, which provides no complete directory or third-party discussion. This book is a great guidebook to help "jumpstart" the gap year program search.

I gave this program a 4 instead of a 5 because it could have gone a step further beyond simply identifying programs under different headings. There could have been more of an objective review process, explaining why each program might be appropriate for a certain kind of young person with a certain set of goals. There could have been comparisons between programs that on the surface appear almost identical. There could have been some due dilligence, pros and cons, what to watch out for, rewards and frustrations that have been experienced by students who enrolled in each program.

But as an introduction, especially with the lack of guidebooks available, the book serves a market need. Hopefully Ms. White will come out with a more in-depth guide in the future!

Must-Have Gap Year Guide
By Emily Glickman
As an educational consultant who advises Manhattan high school students, I am very glad to have read Kristin White's The Complete Guide to the Gap Year. While taking a gap year is common in Great Britain, many Americans are not familiar with this option. White explains what everyone considering a gap year needs to know: how the gap year factors into college admissions, how to pay for it, where to go and what to do. This is a very useful guide.

Incomplete, but a good start

Kristin's guide covers some much-needed advising in this area, such as:

-- the growing trend of college admissions offices understanding the gap year as age-appropriate for students, this isn't about being "bad" or "undermotivated" necessarily
-- an (incomplete) directory of the kinds of programs out there and how to assess a program
-- how gap years can and cannot be written off for tax purposes.

However, there are some significant gaps here:

-- Kristin glides over issues surrounding the enrollment deposit.... it could be unethical for a student to submit an enrollment deposit to secure their place in the incoming class only to say "No thank you, I'd rather be volunteering in Costa Rica." She also doesn't discuss possible disadvantages to taking a year off, particularly taking a year off and reapplying to colleges.

-- She makes volunteering in a foreign country sound like a ski trip in Colorado. There are SERIOUS issues with any kind of international travel, particularly "let's play doctor on poor people" programs that tend to absorb teens and college students. She doesn't have to cover all of these issues, but she should point out they exist and recommend where readers can find resources.

-- She doesn't talk about rights students have when they travel. Do students have a right to retain their passport? If they get sick, do they have a right to choose their hospital? Can you sue in another country the way you can sue in the US? If you can't answer these questions in the book, where could I find these answers?
