Awesome book for those burned out on regular Sudoku

Here's my story, I suspect some of you might find it familiar. When I first discovered Sudoku about 4 years ago I loved it. For about 1.5 years I did a Sudoku almost every day, hard puzzles during the week and very hard puzzles on the weekend. But then I burned out on it - just too much of the same ol' same ol'. About a year ago I started doing Sudoku again, and enjoyed it, but after a few puzzles I'd stop for a month or so.

Then I got Mutant Sudoku last month, and I'm back to doing a puzzle almost every day. Even better, I'm having as much fun as I did four years ago. There are 10 distinctly different types of puzzles, all recognizably Sudoku, but all with twists and turns that stretch your brain in new ways. Some examples are:

Outside Sudoku - a standard 9 by 9 grid, but the starting numbers are on the outside of the grid
Tile Sudoku - where instead of 3x3 inner grids, you have patterns like a tiled floor, so the boxes aren't all the same size little squares
3D Sudoku - where the grid is projected onto the outside of a geometric solid (very tough)

Each of these new types includes at least a dozen or more puzzles, starting from easy and going to well beyond my capabilities. Then there is a section at the end called Chimeric Sudoku where these different types are mixed in mysterious (and terrifying) ways.

This little book has greatly exceed my expectations. I'm stunned to discover how expandable the basic principles of Sudoku are, and I look forward to going a long, long time before saying "Same ol', same ol'" again.

Nicely crafted

Sudoku are popular, and entertaining. Sudoku can also easily be generated automatically. Solving a bunch of automatically-generated sudoku gradually raises the question "why am I doing this? I could write a program that solves these things instantaneously, and solving them myself doesn't present any new challenges."

Mutant Sudoku answers this question, by introducing variations within the sudoku theme. The book is divided into chapters, each containing a particular variant. Each one has its own flavor, and each one has its own invariants, that gradually become clear. In addition, these hand-crafted puzzles have nice touches: "ah! the diagonal turns out to have 1-9 in order!". It's observations like this, and the challenge of discovering each puzzle's invariants, that keep these puzzles entertaining.

Buy this book, then branch out into Nikoli magazine puzzles, games magazine, forsmarts-style contests, US puzzle championships, etc.

Best Sudoku book available

I became a popular columnist because of an article I wrote called Sudoku Variations, which republished the first Number Place puzzle ever made, by Howard Garns. That, I got from Will Shortz. All the rest of the many variants were sent to me by Wei-Hwa Huang, the author of the book here.

Wei-Hwa is the best logic puzzle solver in the world, is a top notch programmer, and knows more about logic puzzles than anyone. His collection is enormous, and world-encompassing.

With all of that skill, he makes *excellent* puzzles. After solving tens of thousands of them, he's got a really good knack for what makes a good challenge. I've got a few hundred sudoku books. It's hard to find "good" ones. But this little book has more depth, more variety, and better challenges than any twenty of the others combined.

He's good enough that he was picked by the US Sudoku Championship to make the puzzles for that event.

I've seen glimpses of his next book, and that will be similarly spectacular.

An excellent book. NOT an attacking manual but great!

This is a great annotated games collection of modern masters! Timman sorts the games by player (3 games each player). There are 11 players (Karpov, Judit Polgar, Shirov, Anand etc.)

Timman's annotations are wonderful without being overbearing. It is NOT a manual of attacking chess. It IS a great annotated games collection centered around attacking chess.

Interesting selection of games, very well commented by the senior Dutch grandmaster - who was once 'the best of the West' behind Karpov and Korchnoi. For some reason quite a lot of the grandmasters from Holland (like Timman, Ree, Donner, Van der Sterren and last but not least ex world champion Euwe) belong to the best and most pleasantly writers on chess there are and have been.
But most important with this book is that a player on club level can learn a lt of it to get better!

A great book about a crap job

A reworking and expansion of stories Derf first told as a webcomic, "Trashed" tells the story of a young man who takes on "the crap job of all crap jobs," working as a trash collector on a sanitation crew.

If you've ever had to work a job where you had to take at least three showers when you got home to even BEGIN to get the stench off you, or even if you've just had one where you had to deal with a knuckleheaded work force and a pain-in-the-ass boss, you wll relate to this story. Derf's drawing technique gets better each time out, and his ability to tell an interesting story is as good as his work with his pencils and pens. "Trashed" is based on Derf's real-life experience. Although it's a novel, it feels real because it IS real.

Buy a copy for yourself, and while you're at it, get one for that teenager or young adult who sits by themself in the corner at family gatherings because they think nobody understands them. They'll be glad you did.

A cool history of trash bonus

Although I found this book enjoyable, and liked the series of facts spread throughout this book on trash and the history of trash, I couldn't really engross myself in it 100%. I don't know if it's because the topic is that of "trash" and there are a few gory scenes in there, or if it's because of the storyline itself, but I simply could not immerse myself in this book.

I will take the easy way out here and use another reviewer's excellent take on this book that reflects how I felt about it:

"There's this thing I tried to express before in a review of a play, about dialog and how it works and doesn't work, and then I read this article about Mad Max: Fury Road that crystallized the whole thing for me. Here's what director George Miller says about dialog.

At a simple level, you're not trying to use dialogue as exposition, you're using it as part of behaviour, and language itself is distorted.

Dialog can be really grating as exposition and really effective as characterization. Dialog tells you a lot, not through the information contained in sentences, but the language used and the way things are said. I think this is especially true and noticeable in film, plays, and comics because they have the expository visual tools to carry some of the load as well, so when dialog is used as exposition, it's extra painful.

I won't call Trashed lazy because it's not lazy, but when I write expository dialog, it's laziness. Always. It's a failure of imagination to show and demonstrate something in a better way."

This may possibly be the core of the issue for me: the dialogue. The conversations seemed a bit contrived and not very realistic. You don't need to expand on every little thing you say, because it takes away from what it is you're saying leaving you feeling a little...well, annoyed.

A very good book nonetheless, with great illustrations and graphics. Just needs a little more work in terms of characterization and story line.

Tries to cover too many bases

This book is fun to read and very well written. However, it seemed to try too hard to suit all audiences. The danger in that, of course, is that it doesn't do a great job for any one type of reader. I got this book for the basic baseball knowledge it contains--I recently got "hooked" on baseball, and wanted to know more about the rules, how to keep score, how statistics are computed and what they mean. And there is some of that in this book. However, a great deal more of the book is aimed at little leaguers--how to pick out equipment, how to practice, and so on. Then there are the sections on great players. I think the readers who pick up this book are going to want more in-depth information on the particular area they are interested in. So, this book may be your first book on baseball, but it won't be your last! Just whets the appetite, so to speak.
The book tries to do too much, and would have better served the reader by concentrating on one area. Nonetheless, Joe Morgan comes across as very knowledgeable and a great guy!

Seems to be designed for parents of Little Leaguers

I was hoping to get a primer on baseball that would help me to see and evaluate more of what was happening as I follow my team from my seat in the stands. What I got was mostly blah. Not up to the usual Dummies books, or perhaps I had too much background and I was looking for something more advanced? (I doubt THAT!) There is a decent glossary in the back and a page on keeping score and a chapter on the advantages and disadvantages of several Major League ballparks, but the rest was supremely forgettable to me. Your PYA (Page Yowza Average) may vary.

Somebody call a copy editor!

As far as the recipes go, they are interesting but a serious amount of editing would be most helpful. The 'pumpkin soup" calls for butternut squash (no pumpkin at all. Page 268 paperback edition) Italian meatballs directions are repeated on the second page (step #2 and 4 are repeated with step #3 in between. For one of the chicken recipes, it calls for Mat instead of meat. These may be picky complaints but when you pay more than a little money for a cookbook I expect the editing to be accurate, especially for recipes. It makes me a little wary of the amounts and ingredients called for. I will keep it but....

Shorter days means it's harder to get things done after work. Grab this book and make dinner easier! Rice is a cheap great base to make dinner with. This is the best book I've found for these recipes. Grab it!

The Spirit of Things explores religious materiality in a region marked by shifting boundaries, multiple beliefs, and trends toward religious exclusivism. While most studies of religion in Southeast Asia focus on doctrines or governmental policy, contributors to this volume recognize that religious "things"―statues, talismans, garments, even sacred automobiles―are crucial to worship, and that they have a broad impact on social cohesion. By engaging with `religion in its tangible forms, faith communities reiterate their essential narratives, allegiances, and boundaries, and negotiate their coexistence with competing belief systems. These ethnographic and historical studies of Southeast Asia furnish us with intriguing perspectives on wider debates concerning the challenges of secularization, pluralism, and interfaith interactions around the world.

In this volume, contributors offer rich ethnographic analyses of religious practices in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Burma that examine the roles materiality plays in the religious lives of Southeast Asians. These essays demonstrate that religious materials are embedded in a host of practices that enable the faithful to negotiate the often tumultuous experience of living amid other believers. What we see is that the call for plurality, often initiated by government, increases the importance of religious objects, as they are the means by which the distinctiveness of a particular faith is “fenced” in a field of competing religious discourses. This project is called “the spirit of things” to evoke both the “aura” of religious objects and the power of material things to manifest “that which is fundamental” about faith and belief.
