Rollo May (1909-1994) was an American existential psychologist, who is associated with both humanistic psychology and existentialist philosophy.

In the Foreword to the first (1960) edition of this book, editor May wrote, "The papers that follow ... were presented in the Symposium on Existential Psychology at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Cincinnati in September, 1959. Some of these papers are impressionistic and are so meant to be... Our purpose is not to give a systematic or definitive account of existential psychology---that cannot be done as yet... Our hope is that this book may serve as a stimulus to students who are interested in the field and that it may suggest topics and questions to be pursued."

Meanwhile, Iranian intellectuals were reimagining ethnic history to reconcile “authentic” Iranian culture with the demands of modernity. From the reform of public education to the symbolism surrounding grand public ceremonies in honor of long-dead poets, Marashi shows how the state invented and promoted key features of the common culture binding state and society. The ideological thrust of that century would become the source of dramatic contestation in the late twentieth century.

Rituals of the Modern State

An interesting case study but not very exciting book, written originally as a PhD thesis. The gist is that Iran followed the same pattern into modernity and nationalism that other nations did and only lagged a behind for a bit, ostensibly because Shah Naser al-Din delayed taking the same European tour that other national leaders did until 1873. The inspiration for most was Baron Haussmann's redesigned Paris, the wide boulevards, glassed in shops which, along with London and its Crystal Palace, created a grand sense of spectacle and public ceremony. It's a pattern well described in Walter Benjamin's Paris The Arcades Project, and widely emulated elsewhere in Cairo, Berlin, Istanbul, Baghdad, the far east and in the Americas. Marashi delights over how much Naser al-Din observed and learned about the effect of an engineered public space on public participation and the imagination.

Marashi's interest is in general legitimization of dynastic power as Iranian society moved into a shared modernity. One aspect of this was the widespread performance of the Ta'ziyeh, a Shiite passion play commemorating the martrydom of Imam Hoseyn during the month of Moharram, usually performed in public spaces or smaller theatres. To this end on a grander scale, the Takyeh Dowlat amphitheatre was built in the 1870s, seating some 20,000 was built, and attending a performance was considered to be a highly desirable social act at all levels of Qajar society.

A second pattern of modernization was the invocation of ancient traditions as idealized seed elements of a nationalist present. Inheriting an ancient culture was often used to validate the historicity of the modern nation-state. One intriguing relationship was the largely Zoroastrian-Parsi community of Bombay which, was regarded as a preserved model of ancient Iran. Another source Iranian intellectuals drew on the were writings of European orientalists who through their research and archeological studies knew more about these earlier periods than did most Iranians, for example their translation of Herodotus' History of the Persians. The Indo-European hypothesis of linguistic genealogy and ancient migration proved useful in establishing Iran's historic position in the pantheon of nations, while differentiating it from Semitic-Arabic culture.

The final pattern is the growth of public education. As happened elsewhere, French and British military advisers were brought in to train, educate and modernize the army and French Lazarists and American Presbyterian missionaries created schools for the education of Christian children along with the France based Alliance Israelite Universelle bringing modern western style education to the Jews, all of which tied in nicely to the nationalist project which required a literate and numerate bureaucratic elite. Reza Shah Pahlavi ascended the Peacock Throne in 1926. Under his rule the missionary aspect of the schools was curtailed, and by 1939 the schools were nationalized and taken over. The Ministry of Education was charged with creating a universal Iranian education and the public sphere poets such as Omar Kayyam and Ferdowsi's 1000 year epic poem the The Shahnameh was given special prominence, as was the visit of Bengali sage and Nobel Prize winning poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1932.

The account ends on the cusp of WW II, just before things start to get really interesting. A reasonable backgrounder to Iranian society and the politics of the State of the day. The audience would be almost entirely academic.

About the Author
French astronomer Jean Dufay (1896–1967) computed the altitude of the earth's ozone layer and was named Honorary Director of the Lyon and Haute-Provence observatories. Translator Owen Gingerich is a former Research Professor of Astronomy and the History of Science at Harvard University.

For Anyone Interested, This Book is a Necessity

For anyone interested in stellar astrophysics, this book gives a very thorough theoretical and practical background in a reasonably short space. It's also written in plain English (which is nice) but doesn't shy away from the math. It's a 'crossover' book that tries to be as useful as a text book but as interesting as a popular science book and I think it succeeds, although I will say it never 'tries too hard' like some PopSci books, and it's a very information-heavy read.

I personally appreciated the Yerkes Classification section, which I had heard about but was nowhere in my astronomy textbook from school.

If you would like to know more about stars and how they work (and how we know how they work), I highly recommend this book.

Introduction to Astrophysics: The Stars

This work fills a unique position in the literature. It is a concrete, middle-level treatment that devotes as much attention to methods of research and observation as it does to results. Here at last is a book in English which bridges the gap between elementary introductory accounts and advanced technical monographs. In this reliable and readable translation by an eminent American specialist in the field, you will have the best guide to observational astrophysics in the English language.

Linmiting his discussion to normal stars, the author begins with background material covering definitions and problems of measurement through the earth's atmosphere. Current methods of stellar photometry and spectroscopy are described lucidly and precisely: photographic, photoelectric, and thermal measurements; slit and slitless spectrographs; photoelectric and electronic spectrophotometry; etc. He then takes up the main results of research involving the classification and properties of normal stars, giving a general introduction to stellar spectra and their classification and an account of the Harvard scheme of star classes and spectral types.

This material prepares us for the construction of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, which reveal the great families of stars and the two main types od stellar populations, and the Yerkes 2-dimensional classification. Subsequent chapters deal with continuous spectra of the stars, gradients, and color temperatures, spectrophotometric classification of two and three dimensions; diameters and effective temperatures of the stars (including the experiments of Michelson and Pease, the occulation and indirect spectrophotometric methods, principles of interferometric measurements of apparent diameters, etc.); masses and densities of stars; and a discussion of general theories about the constitution of stellar atmospheres and the evolution of stars.

The book provides a firm basis upon which the student will build all is future practical and theoretical work - the background indispensable to any advanced study of the manifold problems of astrophysics. It is also a fine book for hobbyists and others with some grounding in astronomy who want to explore these matters in greater depth than elementary texts allow.

Techniques and technology for astronomy

After reading a few chapters, I realized this was not the book I wanted, although it was very informative. At least the first few chapters were devoted to technology available at the time the book was written. This book is probably great for an instructor who wants to give an overview of how astrophysicists coped with the information obtained by less sophisticated technology.

I can liken this to the transition that took place in the technology employed in the clinical laboratory science between 1925 and the present. Every few years there were advances in lab equipment. Amazing new technologies has replaced the cumbersome flame photometer and single channel chemical analyzers of the 1960s. Automated hematology analyzers have replaced red blood cell count using a microscope and a hemocytometer. Chemistry panels can analyze two or three dozen constituents of the same sample nearly instantaneously once the specimen is sampled.

Similar technological advances have taken place in observatories. Sophisticated, computer assisted equipment can do much more with whatever is being observed than could have been done in 1965.

The reason the book would be useful to the current astrophysics instructor is to give students understanding of the underlying principles of state-of-the-art equipment. They need to know how they results they get from current equipment was gotten. It will help them to know when something is going wrong and how to troubleshoot.

Yes, the book contains many mathematical equations, some of which need to show more minutely how they were derived so the student can understand where the final equations came from. Maybe the author expected readers to know that kind of information prior to reading his book. If this is the case, Dufay did not intend his book to be an introduction to astrophysics any more than Roberts and Caserio meant Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry to be an introduction to organic chemistry.

Seeing the reviews on Francis LeBlanc's An Introduction to Stellar Astrophysics, no doubt it would be more useful to me.

Very useful; could be better

Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) I'm the victim of most if not all of this power plays from people close to me. I am happy to say that now that I learned this I feel liberated.

The book is very easy and fast to read (and cheap). If you feel people control you or have pressure over you or you feel inhibited to act as you wish, please read this book - it will help you.

Another little gem in the series

If you work with other people, you know that everyone has an agenda. This is a short book that teaches you how to deal with a wide range of mind games people play in an office setting. The author offers his experience and if you contact him, he is always willing to address your questions. Needless to say, I am a big fan of his. As Benjamin Franklin said it "On once of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Learn from this book, and you will be prepared to recognize and deal with people who want to play mind games with you.
