From the Inside Flap

In 2010 the World Bank recommended sukuk as the best form of lending for growth in developing countries. Since that time, the value of new issues has grown at an astonishing rate of 45% per year.

Sukuk Securities offers regulators, investors, analysts, and students a comprehensive resource that includes a thorough analysis of Islamic debt instruments and information on the latest developments in the burgeoning sukuk securities market. The authors—experts on the topic of Islamic finance—offer insights into the concepts, design features, contract structures, yields, and payoffs in all the global sukuk markets.

Sukuk contracts are based on an entrepreneur and a financier taking a business risk together and sharing the profits, while prepared to incur losses together if the venture does not prove successful. The Sukuk marketplace currently spans over twelve countries, and is expected to further develop as a chosen form of fundraising in the capital markets space.

Sukuk Securities addresses the most common questions and concerns about the sukuk marketplace. The authors clearly define and explain what a sukuk security is and explain how it should be classified vis-à-vis bond markets. The book also explores how a sukuk security is designed and reveals how the various types of sukuk contracts can match the needs of a vast range of issuers in the debt capital markets space—from the agricultural to manufacturing industries. Sukuk Securities clarifies why this form of funding is more suited to today’s market and investment environment, compared to conventional forms of debt contracting, and details the differences between the sukuk market and the common bond market.

Sukuk Securities is designed to be an invaluable addition to the library of any Islamic finance professional or serious student of finance and banking.

—Habib Ahmed, Sharjah Chair in Islamic Law & Finance, Durham University Business School, United Kingdom

“In the relatively new, yet fast growing sukuk market, the authors have captured and given an in-depth description of all the essential elements of the product and how it can be used effectively in the marketplace. This book is an essential tool for all practitioners and those wishing to understand the sukuk market better.”
—Daud Vicary Abdullah, President & CEO, International Center for Education in Islamic Finance

“This volume is a notable achievement. Within these covers the reader gains a thorough understanding of this new debt instrument. The authors provide a comprehensive account of how sukuk are designed and structured, their cash flows, pricing and trading, along with the issues involved in how the securities are rated and regulated.”
—Mervyn K. Lewis, FASSA, Adjunct Professor, University of South Australia

“Sukuk Securities: New Ways of Debt Contracting is certainly a must-read publication for finance experts and enthusiasts whether they are from industry, regulatory or academia. The authors have succinctly and comprehensively presented the different forms of sukuk structures that have been issued since 1998. They have shown that such debt contracting is pro-growth, able to match different needs and more importantly, an effective solution to the problem of increasing national debts which is helpful to financial stability.”
—Datuk Syed Othman Alhabshi, Chief Academic Officer, INCEIF

“The authors conceptualize sukuk as a mode of financing based on asset ownership and profit sharing. With this as a benchmark, they assess other sukuk concepts and classifications, structuring and issuing practices, regulations, and pricing methods. Their contribution will certainly enrich academic discussions, and their outline of sukuk structures yet to be issued should inspire practitioners.”
—Volker Nienhaus, Visiting Professor, University of Reading, United Kingdom

“This book is a must-read for all those interested in capital market innovations, now that sukuk securities are making huge waves in many parts of the world. The authors provide valuable insights into the mechanics and dynamics of sukuks in terms of both theory and practice. Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using C# with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath, by Eric Carter, Eric Lippert

Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) was released in August of 2003. It brought the power of .NET to developing Word and Excel applications. While powerful, it was also lacking in some key features, and difficult to use. VSTO 2005 will be released as part of the Whidbey release. It will be incorporated in the more advanced versions of Visual Studio .NET 2005, and will also be available as a stand-alone product. It has corrected many of the major problems with the first version, and is poised to experience a rapid growth in usage. Coverage has been expanded to include Outlook and InfoPath in addition to Word and Excel. This book is not only written by key members of the team that developed VSTO 2005, but it will also be the first book available on VSTO. The authors provide both an introduction to VSTO as well as a tutorial for using it, including lots of practical examples, and a refreshing honesty about both the strengths and pitfalls of the technology. This book will be a must-have for all the developers considering VSTO.

From the Back Cover

"With the application development community so focused on the Smart Client revolution, a book that covers VSTO from A to Z is both important and necessary. This book lives up to big expectations. It is thorough, has tons of example code, and covers Office programming in general terms— topics that can be foreign to the seasoned .NET developer who has focused on ASP.NET applications for years. Congratulations to Eric Lippert and Eric Carter for such a valuable work!"

—Tim Huckaby, CEO, InterKnowlogy, Microsoft regional director

"This book covers all of the ins and outs of programming with Visual Studio Tools for Office in a clear and concise way. Given the authors' exhaustive experiences with this subject, you can't get a more authoritative description of VSTO than this book!"

—Paul Vick, technical lead, Visual Basic .NET, Microsoft Corporation

"Eric and Eric really get it. Professional programmers will love the rich power of Visual Studio and .NET, along with the ability to tap into Office programmability. This book walks you through programming Excel, Word, InfoPath, and Outlook solutions."

—Vernon W. Hui, test lead, Microsoft Corporation

"This book is an in-depth, expert, and definitive guide to programming using Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005. It is a must-have book for anyone doing Office development."

—Siew Moi Khor, programmer/writer, Microsoft Corporation

"We don't buy technical books for light reading; we buy them as a resource for developing a solution. This book is an excellent resource for someone getting started with Smart Client development. For example, it is common to hear a comment along the lines of, 'It is easy to manipulate the Task Pane in Office 2003 using VSTO 2005,' but until you see something like the example at the start of Chapter 15, it is hard to put 'easy' into perspective. This is a thorough book that covers everything from calling Office applications from your application, to building applications that are Smart Documents. It allows the traditional Windows developer to really leverage the power of Office 2003."

—Bill Sheldon, principal engineer, InterKnowlogy, MVP

"Eric Carter and Eric Lippert have been the driving force behind Office development and Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005. The depth of their knowledge and understanding of VSTO and Office is evident in this book. Professional developers architecting enterprise solutions using VSTO 2005 and Office System 2003 now have a new weapon in their technical arsenal."

—Paul Stubbs, program manager, Microsoft Corporation

"This book is both a learning tool and a reference book, with a richness of tables containing object model objects and their properties, methods, and events. I would recommend it to anyone considering doing Office development using the .NET framework; especially people interested in VSTO programming."

—Rufus Littlefield, software design engineer/tester, Microsoft Corporation

Visual Studio Tools for Office is both the first and the definitive book on VSTO 2005 programming, written by the inventors of the technology. VSTO is a set of tools that allow professional developers to use the full power of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to put code behind Excel 2003, Word 2003, Outlook 2003, and InfoPath 2003. VSTO provides functionality never before available to the Office developer: data binding and data/view separation, design-time views of Excel and Word documents inside Visual Studio, rich support for Windows Forms controls in a document, the ability to create custom Office task panes, server-side programming support against Office, and much more.

Carter and Lippert cover their subject matter with deft insight into the needs of .NET developers learning VSTO. This book

  • Explains the architecture of Microsoft Office programming and introduces the object models

  • Teaches the three basic patterns of Office solutions: Office automation executables, Office add-ins, and code behind a document

  • Explores the ways of customizing Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath, and plumbs the depths of programming with their events and object models

  • Introduces the VSTO programming model

  • Teaches how to use Windows Forms in VSTO and how to work with the Actions Pane

  • Delves into VSTO data programming and server data scenarios

  • Explores .NET code security and VSTO deployment

Advanced material covers working with XML in Word and Excel, developing COM add-ins for Word and Excel, and creating Outlook add-ins with VSTO.

Preface

In 2002, the first release of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework was nearing completion. A few of us at Microsoft realized that Office programming was going to miss the .NET wave unless we did something about it.

What had come before was Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a simple development environment integrated into all the Office applications. Each Office application had a rich object model that was accessed via a technology known as COM. Millions of developers identified themselves as "Office developers" and used VBA and the Office COM object models to do everything from automating repetitive tasks to creating complete business solutions that leveraged the rich features and user interface of Office. These developers realized that their users were spending their days in Office. By building solutions that ran inside of Office, they not only made their users happy, they were also able to create solutions that did more and cost less by reusing functionality already available in the Office applications.

Unfortunately, because of some limitations of VBA, Office programming was starting to get a bad rap. Solutions developed in VBA by small workgroups or individuals would gain momentum and a professional developer would have to take them over and start supporting them. To a professional developer, the VBA environment felt simple and limited, and of course, it enforced a single language: Visual Basic. VBA embedded code in every customized document, which made it hard to fix bugs and update solutions because a bug would get replicated in documents across the enterprise. Security weaknesses in the VBA model led to a rash of worms and macro viruses that made enterprises turn VBA off.

Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework provided a way to address all these problems. A huge opportunity existed to not only combine the richness of the new .NET Framework and developer tools with the powerful platform that Office has always provided for developers but to also solve the problems that were plaguing VBA. The result of this realization was Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO).

The first version of VSTO was simple, but it accomplished the key goal of letting professional developers use the full power of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to put code behind Excel 2003 and Word 2003 documents and templates. It let professional developers develop Office solutions in VB.NET and C#. It solved the problem of embedded code by linking a document to a .NET assembly instead of embedding it in the document. It also introduced a new security model that used .NET code-access security to prevent worms and macro viruses.

The second version of VSTO, known as VSTO 2005, the version of VSTO covered by this book, is even more ambitious. It brings with it functionality never available to the Office developer before, such as data binding and data/view separation, design-time views of Excel and Word documents inside Visual Studio, rich support for Windows Forms controls in the document, the ability to create custom Office task panes, server-side programming support against Office—and that's just scratching the surface. Although the primary target of VSTO is the professional developer, this does not mean that building an Office solution with VSTO is rocket science. VSTO makes it possible to create very rich applications with just a few lines of code.

This book tries to put into one place all the information you need to succeed using VSTO to program against Word 2003, Excel 2003, Outlook 2003, and InfoPath 2003. It introduces the Office object models and covers the most commonly used objects in those object models. In addition, this book will help you avoid some pitfalls that result from the COM origins of the Office object models.

This book also provides an insider view of all the rich features of VSTO. We participated in the design and implementation of many of these features. We can therefore speak from the unique perspective of living and breathing VSTO for the past three years. Programming Office using VSTO is powerful and fun. We hope you enjoy using VSTO as much as we enjoyed writing about it and creating it.

The Bible of VSTO
By Mohammad Jalloul
When you see volume that huge (952 pages less the index), you are led into thinking that this is another documentation rehash.

Well, this is not the case here. The book's size is well justified by the fact that they present the material with the least rehash possible and give realistic examples that are mostly usable without any modification or customization at all. Quite impressive, IMHO, is the fact that they take it really seriously and make the extra effort to write samples that properly follow coding conventions and style. It is quite sad and disappointing to still see these days books by self-proclaimed gurus presenting FooBar-ish sample code (due to lack of taste or lack of imagination) without an regard or respect to the readers. Whatever happened to coding style?

Even though the book is written by two Microsofties that have actually worked intimately with VSTO, and that's a clear advantage, they sure utilize that in the finest way possible: almost every page has a code snippet, a diagram, a table, or even a screenshot. The prose is direct to the point and avoids going excessively over material that is already available elsewhere, making this book one of the few huge books that are actually not boring. Heck, you can actually start coding from the first chapter.

Chapeau pas to Eric² for committing to deliver such a professional and comprehensive work.

Much value to be found here...
By Thomas Duff
Part of my 2006 professional goals involve learning more about Microsoft's collaboration software. To that end, I got a review copy of Eric Carter and Eric Lippert's book Visual Studio Tools for Office - Using C# with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath. Good stuff here...

Contents:

Part 1 - An Introduction to VSTO: An Introduction to Office Programming; Introduction to Office Solutions

Part 2 - Office Programming in .NET: Programming in Excel; Working with Excel Events; Working with Excel Objects; Programming Word; Working with Word Events; Working with Word Objects; Programming Outlook; Working with Outlook Events; Working with Outlook Objects; Introduction to InfoPath

Part 3 - Office Programming in VSTO: The VSTO Programming Model; Using Windows Forms in VSTO; Working with Action Pane; Working with Smart Tags in VSTO; VSTO Data Programming; Server Data Scenarios; .NET Code Security; Deployment

Part 4 - Advanced Office Programming: Working with XML in Excel; Working with XML in Word; Developing COM Add-Ins for Word and Excel; Creating Outlook Add-Ins with VSTO

Index

The two Erics have put together a very nice volume that shows how the programmability of Office is structured, and then how that object model can be used within the Visual Studio environment using special tools provided for that purpose. While you have to have the latest and greatest Office and VS software to follow along, their writing style is pretty straight-forward, and the reader should be able to pick up on the core concepts to understand the possibilities inherent in the integration. Even if you're not necessarily ready to fire up VS to program Word or Excel, Part 1 and 2 do a great job in showing the object layout of those Office components and how they can be manipulated. If you've never gotten into the code that can be added to a Word or Excel document, those two parts of the book would be worth it alone.

For me, I'm going to gain two benefits from this book. First, the object model information will help me better integrate Office into my Notes/Domino applications. I do some of that now, but the object model for Excel and Word have always been somewhat hazy to me. This book will help clarify those areas. Second, I think that knowing more about InfoPath will be part of my process as I seek to understand more about Microsoft collaboration application development. As a result, having this book should help me tie InfoPath into the Visual Studio environment and get a running start on my education.

Definitely a useful addition to your library if this is an area of interest to you...

Nice walkthrough of programming and embedding in Office
By Jack D. Herrington
This is a solid walkthrough of building C# automation code for Office, and for writing code that integrates into Office. Excel is covered in depth. As are Word, Outlook and the fascinating new Infopath product that is an XML technologies client.

The writing is good. I could have used a few more non-screenshot graphics to illustrate the control flow between applications. But these are nit-picks. This is a solid book on automating and integrating with office using C# and .NET framework.

Wavelets: A Concise Guide, by Amir-Homayoon Najmi

Introduced nearly three decades ago as a variable resolution alternative to the Fourier transform, a wavelet is a short oscillatory waveform for analysis of transients. The discrete wavelet transform has remarkable multi-resolution and energy-compaction properties. Amir-Homayoon Najmi’s introduction to wavelet theory explains this mathematical concept clearly and succinctly.

Wavelets are used in processing digital signals and imagery from myriad sources. They form the backbone of the JPEG2000 compression standard, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation uses biorthogonal wavelets to compress and store its vast database of fingerprints. Najmi provides the mathematics that demonstrate how wavelets work, describes how to construct them, and discusses their importance as a tool to investigate and process signals and imagery. He reviews key concepts such as frames, localizing transforms, orthogonal and biorthogonal bases, and multi-resolution. His examples include the Haar, the Shannon, and the Daubechies families of orthogonal and biorthogonal wavelets.

Our capacity and need for collecting and transmitting digital data is increasing at an astonishing rate. So too is the importance of wavelets to anyone working with and analyzing digital data. Najmi’s primer will be an indispensable resource for those in computer science, the physical sciences, applied mathematics, and engineering who wish to obtain an in-depth understanding and working knowledge of this fascinating and evolving field.

Review

A complete, concise and clear exposition of the more traditional tools related to linear filtering.

(Davide Barbieri Mathematical Reviews)

Since their emergence in the last eighties and early nineties of the twentieth century, wavelets and other multi-scale transforms have become powerful signal and image processing tools. Najmi's book provides physicists and engineers with a clear and concise introduction to this fascinating field.

Full of embarrassing mathematical errors
By David Lurie
I'm only on page 22, and already I have a long laundry list of mathematical errors.

The author can't decide on a notation for vectors in R^n. Are they row vectors? Column vectors? Do we use brackets or parentheses? Just pick one, for crying out loud.

Another example: "Hilbert spaces generalize the familiar Euclidean three-dimensional space R^3.... For instance, an orthogonal projection from the tip of a standard three dimensional vector onto an arbitrary plane through the origin has its analog in Hilbert spaces in the form of an orthogonal projection onto a linear subspace...." First of all, what the heck is the "tip" of a vector and how to you project from it? And what is the definition of projection of a vector onto a plane in R^3 if not exactly the definition given as the "analog" in Hilbert spaces?

The book gives a definition for a bounded linear operator, then inexplicably gives a different (though equivalent) definition for a bounded linear functional, which is a type of linear operator. Why not use the same definition that was already given? Why confuse matters by giving extra definitions for special cases when the original definition works just as well? To top it off, on the very next page we are given yet a third definition, this time for what it means for the point evaluation functional to be bounded. At this point the reader now has three (!!) definitions for a bounded point evaluation functional. I just don't even...

The author states that the integral notation will always refer to the Lebesgue integral but then uses the integral notation for inner product of distributions at the first possible chance without any explanation. This notation is actually standard, but it's nonsense without explanation, particularly when the text explicitly states that the notation means something different.

While many of my complaints above are arguably aesthetic, there are several serious mathematical problems with the text. Theorems are stated without proof, which may be fine for such a text, but some of the supplied proofs are a complete mess. One proof of an equivalence omits one of the directions. The author seems to not understand L_2 equivalence classes of functions. The most disturbing mathematical defect is the author's use of the word basis. Apparently the author does not know what a basis is, which is inexcusable given the subject. For example, the author states (incorrectly) that the complex exponentials are a basis (!!) for L_2(R). In fact, the complex exponentials are clearly not even members of L_2(R). (The difference between Schauder and Hamel bases is not mentioned.) These errors are embarrassing.

I think the reason I am so frustrated by these deficiencies is that the text would otherwise be fantastic. It would have been SO EASY for the author to have gotten these things right, and if he had, he would have written a beautiful text.

A Fine Introduction
By Illuminatus
With ever increasing frequency, wavelets are being successfully applied to virtually every aspect of signal and image processing, with a commensurate expansion in both the research and pedagogic literature. As a result, the novice can often find it challenging to achieve a rapid introduction to this increasingly important field. Dr. Najmi's new book, developed over more than a decade of teaching related courses at the Johns Hopkins University, provides an elegant solution to that problem.

The opening chapter offers a condensed but comprehensive introduction to the relevant mathematics, covering such necessary topics as Lebesgue integration, normed vector spaces, Fourier Transforms and frame representations. After a brief survey of linear time invariant systems, wavelets are introduced as a generalisation of the windowed Fourier Transform. Subsequent chapters explore the properties of the most common types of wavelets and several important applications. Although the language is mathematically precise, frequent use of terms such as "time series" and "filter banks", as well as the inclusion of many descriptive diagrams, will comfort the engineer as well. There are problems at the end of each chapter making this book suitable for a text in a one semester course or (possibly tutored) self study.

In short, Wavelets: A Concise Guide is an approachable and self contained introduction that will carry the reader from the absolute beginning to the capability to achieve informed solutions to many problems in modern signal processing.

It is not surprising that a book of this type, especially in a first edition, contains a number of typographical errors. Most have been discovered and they can be remedied by reference to the errata, which can be found on the Johns Hopkins University Press web site. (Amazon's policy forbids me from providing the URL.)

Wavelets: A Concise Guide
By Nasser M Nasrabadi, US Army Research Laboratory
This is an excellent introduction to the wavelet transform that combines a thorough discussion of essential mathematical structures (Hilbert spaces, orthogonal bases, frames), with all the practical discrete signal analysis concepts and methods of linear system theory (the discrete Fourier transform, discrete convolution for finite length discrete time data, the Z transform, etc.).
The continuous wavelet transform is introduced in analogy to the windowed Fourier transform. The Haar and the Shannon wavelets are used to motivate the general theory of multi-resolution analysis spaces, orthogonal and bi-orthogonal wavelets, and wavelet packets. A short chapter at the end provides an excellent exposition of two-dimensional application of wavelets to images. This is a highly recommended text for engineers, physical scientists, mathematicians, and everyone with a desire to have a firm theoretical and practical understanding of the foundations of wavelets.
