About the Author
Therese Heckenkamp, eighteen when she completed the first draft of Past Suspicion, has been writing stories since before she could spell. A homeschooled student, she won numerous writing awards while growing up. Therese lives in Wisconsin with her husband and three children. Her second book, Frozen Footprints, is a Christian suspense thriller for readers 16 and up. a great summer read for teens/adults

"Past Suspicion" by Therese Heckenkamp is a terrific fiction novel suitable for teens and adults as well. It is the story of a young woman whose mother dies and leaves her in the care of an uncle that she has never met. Forced to live in an unfamiliar sleepy little town, Robin plans her escape upon her eighteenth birthday. While tolerating her circumstances and looking forward to "freedom," she discovers much about her mother's secretive past that intrigues her. This leads her to delve more deeply into the mysterious events of her mother's past. Along the way, Robin forms some special relationships and learns to love and to trust once again.

Therese masterfully develops the characters so that the reader truly feels involved in the story and has an interest in Robin's personal outcome. Though I usually prefer to read nonfiction, I was drawn to pick up Therese's book again and again as the characters were believable and their issues were things for which I felt I could relate. This book would make a great summer read for teens and adults! I know you will enjoy it!

A particularly compelling achievement

It is not often that I write about a woman who cut her first draft of a mystery at age eighteen, but it is true in the case of Therese Heckenkamp, a fellow Wisconsinite! Heckenkamp has already won numerous awards for writing at her young age and lives in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
Robin Finley has just lost her mother, her home, and any family except an uncle in some small town in Wisconsin, where she is headed for an uncertain future. She meets two young men, almost right off the bat. One is a newspaper reporter, and the other is a "free spirit" who captures her imagination and desire for freedom. Then there is the matter of just what happened to her mother in this small town. She had a mysterious fall off of a balcony at a deserted mansion more than twenty years before. Robin begins to unravel the story of her mother's high school years: the romances; the "fall"; her relationship with Robin's quiet but caring uncle; and the map, which turns into the focal point of the story. Robin also overhears a conversation which leads her to believe she might be in danger:
"The words were spoken with such wrath, it hurt my ears to hear what little I did, but I had to stay and listen. What did this mean? I trembled in my hiding place. The very fact that these two guys-the only two guys I knew in this whole town-were together, alerted me that something was up..."
Being home-schooled, Heckenkamp probably understands something about the brilliant recluse. It shows in her writing. Her heroine is sensitive, angry, hurt, intelligent, stubborn, curious, and has a large heart underneath all of her confusion. She is a typical seventeen year old...Heckenkamp captures the angst of those years beautifully. Her plot is solid, and is very movie or television friendly...lots of action; pathos; conflict; glamour; etc. It's all there, and Heckenkamp is a confident and sure writer. She has no trouble keeping all of her balls in the air and resolving them at the end of this page-turner with a flair. Her denouement is terrifying, exciting, and then whoosh...she brings in the romantic element with panache.
Past Suspicion is a terrific first mystery/novel from a very promising talent. It is a particularly compelling achievement considering Ms. Heckenkamp has her future ahead of her. Bravo!

Clean and Exciting

After reading several disappointing or even disturbing Christian YA fiction books, I was reluctant to give Past Suspicion a chance. But when I discovered that the author was an eighteen-year-old homeschooler when she wrote the first draft, I bought the book, my expectations high. I wasn't let down. Past Suspicion is a decent suspense novel marked by tastefulness and believability.
Robin Finley, a sheltered seventeen-year-old, is forced to move to Wisconsin from California after her mother's sudden passing. Feeling stifled by the idea of small-town life with an uncle she barely knows, Robin counts the days until her grand escape to freedom on her eighteenth birthday. While working at her uncle's bookstore, she separately meets two young men interested in helping her sort out her mother's past, forever marked by her tragic fall from a local haunted mansion. Robin pores through old newspapers and her mother's teenage diary, trying to find the truth about the accident as the two young men compete for her attention. Now Robin must find out who her mother was - and who she herself will be - in the midst of a sinister plot that takes everyone by surprise.
Robin is a very believable character. She's no angel, but neither is she an aggravating brat. She's a very realistic, relatable teen struggling with a desire for freedom. She has moments of rebellion, passion, stubbornness, silliness, and gullibility, just like any average teen. Robin's intelligence and sense of decency make her very likeable and understandable.
What I really appreciated about this book is its ability to be exciting without compromising decency. Though the book contains elements of crime, violence, and evil, it never goes overboard. It's a definite accomplishment considering the plot revolves around two violent falls at a spooky mansion. Also tastefully handled is the romance element. Robin is being pursued romantically by two young men, but neither guy gets aggressive with her. Never does the book stray into raunchy territory at all; even though both guys spend some alone time with Robin, nothing inappropriate happens. The romance is understated and sweeter than commonly found in YA books, even other Christian ones.
Past Suspicion is a solid three star book that manages to be exciting without being tasteless. I recommend this one to readers age twelve and up who seek good, clean adventure tinged with romance and suspense. This is a story that will keep you flipping pages - or mashing Kindle keys.

About the Author

David Kilcullen is the author of the highly acclaimed The Accidental Guerrilla and Counterinsurgency. A former soldier and diplomat, he served as a senior advisor to both General David H. Petraeus and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In recent years he has focused on fieldwork to support aid agencies, non-government organizations and local communities in conflict and disaster-affected regions, and on developing new ways to think about complex conflicts in highly networked urban environments.

The Present and Future of Warfare

There is something familiar yet new about David Kilcullen's Out of the Mountains: The Coming Age of the Urban Guerilla. By looking at four trends: population growth, urbanization, coastal life, and interconnectedness, Kilcullen paints a rather convincing picture of the future of warfare. Instead of large-scale state on state warfare, Kilcullen predicts that warfare will take place where population is likely to be centered in urban areas along the coast.

Technology will play a role because technology makes people more interconnected, particularly in crowded coastal areas like the ones Kilcullen describes. I'm not sure that we have not heard many of these predictions before, but what sets this book apart is the depth Kilcullen takes his argument.

He uses several case studies from Iraq and Afghanistan, the various rebellions throughout the Middle East and Africa, and Jamaica among others to illustrate why the problems experienced by rulers and armies in these locations don't lend themselves to conventional solutions, but rather are a product of the new conditions of warfare that he sees increasing in the future.

I was impressed with the argument itself, but if we accept Kilcullen's argument that all four of the above mentioned factors play a role in future of war, what do we do about it?

At first blush, one might think that we need to strengthen government capacities in these troubled areas, but given that development in the most charitable appraisal has had mixed results that doesn't seem like a great solution. Further, these projects take money, which may be in a short supply in the era of austerity and increasingly partisan politics.

In conclusion, Kilcullen's ideas seem more than plausible, but how we deal with them is a question that this book seems to leave open-ended for further debate.

Feral cities, fish traps, and soccer hooligans

There are a half-dozen actors responsible for the U.S. exit from Iraq. Barack Obama, Generals Petraeus and Odierno, Emma Sky, the voting public, and David Kilcullen. The go-to guy for counterinsurgency, Colonel-professor Kilcullen's new book analyzes a number of recent combat actions and draws some conclusions about the future.
Any number of authors have now covered TF Ranger in Mogadishu, and each brings new insight; Kilcullen describes Somali swarm tatics that are now widely applicable in the wired Arab Spring. The LeT attack on Mumbai, and the various uprisings in the Middle East over the past couple of years, Afghanistan, and Jamaica all get attention. Mr. Kilcullen is making the point that complex, crowded, coastal megacities are predominating, and will be the focus of conflict in the coming decades. Hence the title 'Out of the Mountains' describes the irrelevance of remote Afghan valleys and the importance of Mumbai, Karachi, Dhaka, or Rio.
Mr. Kilcullen also lays out his theory of competitive control, and though he never explicitly states it, shows that the Taliban should never have been removed from power in Afghanistan, as it at least provided a measure of stability. Competitive control encompasses the strongest and stickiest memes, so that organizations like Hezbollah that provide health care, reconstruction, education, and so forth, prevail by providing armed security and social services, much like functioning governments.
Mr. Kilcullen's work is standard in military colleges and think tanks, it is drawn from experience both on the ground and at higher orders of command, and makes for compelling reading.

A perspective on war that you will not get elsewhere

This is a book on how our military should plan for future wars. David Kilcullen has a unique mindset, as he is a trained anthropologist who has served as a counter-insurgency expert to Condoleeza Rice and David Petraeus.

This book blends the kinds of ideas we have heard from Donald Rumsfeld with the thoughts of traditional writers in urban studies such as Mike Davis or Saskia Sassen-Koob. He looks at war as a battle for control in cities. To Kilcullen, fighting is an activity that is a part of the regular life of cities. But an important distinction, and one that is a basic assumption for this book, is that warring groups are not limited to nation-states. You have to recognize that there can be many factions within a city.

He draws his analysis from several cities: the civil war in Somalia, the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, the 2010 revolution in Tunisia, the intifada in Benghazi, and gang warfare in the slums of Jamaica.

Kilcullen's premise is that four transforming forces - urbanization, migration of people to coastal cities, population growth itself, and then the increasing interconnectedness made possible by electronic media - have changed how wars will be fought in the future.

"The future conflict climate, as we have seen, will be coastal, networked, and overwhelmingly urban - so that we need to orient ourselves toward conflict in connected cities...Dominant theories of international relations take the nation-state as their basic building block. We need to bring our analysis down to the city and sub-city level, understanding communities and cities a 'system under stress' in their own right, treating cities as biological or natural systems....A related insight is the need to conceive of a city as a flow and process, rather just place; with violence shaping and creating the landscape and not just happening in it."

As with almost everything else in the world, the explosion in media changes the future nature of war. One example is the 2008 Mumbai attack. This small group of terrorists in Mumbai controlled their operation from a bank of computers in Pakistan. They followed twitter updates made in Mumbai by newspapers and regular citizens to learn real-time details: where the police were arriving, where traffic was blocked, and where their partner cells were having success. With that, those planners sent texts to the soldiers on the ground. Those media, as well as facebook and youtube, were vital throughout the Arab Spring.

The mistake that could be made, he argues, is to believe that Afghanistan and Iraq will be the models for future conflicts. Modelling matters because it determines the long-range investments made by governments with their military expenditures. But recent wars - Afghanistan was a rural war (Iraq's fighting was mostly in cities) fought without navies among communities with little in the way of modern media - provide the wrong viewpoint.

Moreover, as the likely pursuant of war in foreign cities in the future, the United States should realize that it will be judged by how it conducts those efforts. War can kill a city, even if it makes it secure. For example, he believes that making Baghdad safe had the unfortunate effect of ruining the efficiency of it as a place.

This was for me one of the most thought-provoking books that I have read on the topic of war. I have read a lot of great work (Ghost Wars, The Forever War, Night Draws Near, The Looming Tower, The Good Soldiers) on the wars of the last decade, but I cannot think of one that takes so much from such a variety of disciplines to develop a systematic viewpoint on how the near future will differ from the recent past.

The Floodgates are open again for Michael McDowell's BLACKWATER

The BLACKWATER serial novel was originally published in 1983 by Avon. This series was published in the midst of the 1980s Horror Boom. My hats off to Tough Time Publishing for introducing this serial novel to a new audience 30 years later. I am a big fan of horror and I remember reading this series when it was first published; eagerly awaiting each installment. And I get to relive these books a second time; again as a serial novel. I am huge collector of 1980s horror paperback (all in new condition) and I own all the Michael McDowell Avon novels; needless to say I am fan. The biggest compliment I can give this series is I will be purchasing the Limited Edition of the series to be published later this year by Centipede Press; retail is $250.00. You do not spend that kind of money on a set of books unless they are worth it. So, don't hesitate, join the deluge that is BLACKWATER!

Can't wait for the next installment.

A terrifically fun and creepy read, McDowell's style and tone evoke a horror novel from a simpler--but by no means less frightening--time. The characters are enigmatic and sometimes downright maddening. Their willingness to write off dramatic irony in a order to keep intact their way of life will have you shouting the equivalent of "don't open that door!" The setting in rural, early 20th century Alabama is as idyllic as it is claustrophobic. I can hardly wait for the rest of the series to come out!

Well-Written, Entertaining Supernatural Saga

Is this series flawed? Sure. You can't crank 'em out like MM did and not miss some problems. Still, there is much here to enjoy. McDowell's creation is very evocative of the part of Alabama he writes about (I used to live there), and his characters avoid for the most part becoming the one-dimensional "types" so typical of popular fiction.

The characters are all engagingly drawn, quite distinctly individual without clunky self-conscious quirks nailed to them and dragged around the room like you will often find in precious contemporary literary fiction. The characters sometime come off as movie characters, but no more than, say, a John Updike character does, or a Bellow character. They are graceful, cruel, funny, ambiguous, dramatic. We finish the series not know quite how to regard Elinor Caskey, the amphibious Lovecraftian creature that crawls out of the floodwaters and insinuates herself into the Caskey clan. At best, she amoral.

McDowell's prose is a treat to read. He is precise and elegant, a far better craftsman than most if not all of his better-known contemporaries.

In short, this series is a real treat. I read it when it first came out in the early 80's, 25 years ago. I remembered very little, except for a single image, really--the image that occurs near the beginning of the first volume when the preacher woman stumbles upon Elinor soaking in a pool of water--in her froglike state. I loved rediscovering this series.

Loved this book so much!

I am a suscriber to Inner Expansion and I have been waiting for this book. Howard has brought alot of things home for me. I feel as if a weight has been lifted from me. Because I know now all of the feelings of guilt and other emotions don't belong to me. This book makes you really think and how we can improve our lives. We can live more productively and simply without taking on the burdens of others. Keep up the good work!

Comprehensive!

This is a great work, I found it very informative. Over the last two years, I've tried several books that are variations on this theme - introductions to information retrieval and/or computer vision - but with this one, I feel like I am actually learning how to do it right. The first two chapters lay out the signal processing preliminaries, and get the book off to a fast start. Then, methods for media description and classification are explained in-depth. The level of complexity is raised from the first to the third part. That allowed me, as a half-way expert, to jump right to the point where the story becomes interesting for me. Throughout the book the emphasis is on practical algorithms and efficient application. The author's views are highly original and very similar to my own. I believe, this is a good read if you are a computer science student.

An excellent textbook for computer science students

This is a great book. Using a minimum of mathematics and a maximum of analogy and explanation expressed in a direct and readable style, the author brings multimedia retrieval theory as close to the everyday mind as might be possible. Throughout the book, the presentation is very dense but clear. Starting from basic concepts of signal processing and machine learning, the author develops a consistent theory of multimedia analysis as I have not seen it done before. Last but not least, I found some of the passages quite funny and entertaining.

This book is the best presentation of this potentially confusing subject I have ever read. Within the range that this intends to cover, it is an outstanding reference. It carves out the common aspects of such diverse fields as signal processing, psychophysics, media theory, semiotics, psychological similarity and machine learning. Excellent helper in laboratory

I bought this book upon a lot of advices of my friends who attended Internetional Physics Olympiads.I'm coaching Olympiads Preparation students in my school. They had some difficulties in measuring,calculating the errors and evaluating their results.The book showed a lot of ways to prevent it. Statistical approach to datas in evaluating errors is invaluable for some experiments, esp radioactive decay experiments. Also the representation of errors in graphs is helpful to students in expressing their experiments result since the evaluations are the most important part of the experiments and errors are indispensable part of it.Now my clidren are more confident and they are more promising.
