Der AutorPeter A. Kersten hat Physik an der TU Dortmund studiert und an der TU Berlin im Fachbereich Elektrotechnik promoviert. Er ist als Professor an der Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt tätig und vertritt dort das Lehrgebiet Mechatronik. Zudem engagiert er sich in der Lehrveranstaltung „Physik für Ingenieurinnen und Ingenieure“ in den verschiedenen MINT-Studiengängen der Hochschule. Neben einem hohen Praxisbezug sind ihm hierbei auch die Freude und das Interesse an physikalischen Fragestellungen wichtig.

About the Author

Peter A. Kersten, 1964 in Bochum geboren, hat Physik an der TU Dortmund studiert und an der TU Berlin im Fachbereich Elektrotechnik promoviert. Nach einem Auslandsaufenthalt an der Technischen Universität Dänemark war er in leitenden Funktionen in verschiedenen Industrieunternehmen tätig. Er ist Autor zahlreicher Patente und Publikationen im Bereich Mechatronik.

Seit 2009 ist er als Professor an der Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt tätig und vertritt dort das Lehrgebiet Mechatronik. Er engagiert sich in der Lehrveranstaltung „Physik für Ingenieurinnen und Ingenieure“ in den verschiedenen MINT-Studiengängen der Hochschule. Neben einem hohen Praxisbezug sind ihm hierbei auch die Freude und das Interesse an physikalischen Fragestellungen wichtig. Diese Aspekte fördert er auch gerne in populärwissenschaftlichen Vorträgen und Veranstaltungen wie Kinder- und Jugendunis.

ALYONA NICKELSEN is an award-winning artist whose work has been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions as well as in most of the country’s major art magazines, including American Artist, American Artist Drawing, The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist, American Art Collector, and Art Business News. Ms. Nickelsen is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. Ms. Nickelsen lives with her family in Southern California.

Truly the Bible of Today's Colored Pencil Techniques

Finally- a truly outstanding and beautifully researched and presented book on today's colored pencil artwork. The appendix alone is worth the price of the book- which has charts showing the lightfast ratings of (almost) all major brands of colored pencils (including the brand new Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils, Derwent Colorsoft, Faber-Castell Polychromos and many more)...well, all except standard Prismacolors since the manufacturers would not give the author that information. A very useful color index is also given for colors when it was available, which gives you information about what pigments were used in the manufacture of the pencils...and another thing I have been wanting- an up-front break-down of which pencils are waxed based and which are oil based.

This book has all the information you will need- such as materials, including much needed information on solvents to achieve a paintery look that puts colored pencils out of the 'drawing' stage and into the 'fine art painting' stage. Information about how to rough up paper to achieve certain effects (such as orange peel)and how to frame colored pencils is included, and a great (and easily understandable) section on color theory, light (and shadows). Her explanations are so clear and easy to understand that they are like a breath of fresh air.

Mastering Essential Techniques is a terrific section, that includes the use of photos and photoshop. I loved seeing the equipment she uses too- including the new electric hot and cold colored pencil drawing tablet.

A truly exciting section is included on creating surfaces and textures that includes:
Backgrounds (my real weakness)
Greenery (grass and leaves)
Flowers including white petals (very difficult for me to handle)
Water (including dewdrops, liquid, and ice)
Fire (I have never seen this included- I want to do volcanic eruptions)
Surfaces (beautifully done Wood, Silver, Pearls, Cut Crystal, Fabric, Denim, Lace)
Fruit and Vegetables

The book contains a large section on practicing with simple still lifes, which have downloadable patterns and reference photos from the author's website including a pair, cherries, an orange, Indian corn, a dandelion, a wooden mortar and pestle, crumpled lined paper, eggs, a clear glass of water, multicolored glass saltshaker, marbles, a swirled glass perfume bottle. The exercises go from simple to very complex and challenging. After I finish them all I have no doubt that I will be able to paint almost anything in colored pencil.

In short, I have loved colored pencils with a passion since the '70's, but still, many decades later, get frustrated with the results and techniques that I have found in other colored pencil books (in particular trying to use complementary colors which always seemed to grey out my result)- so I piddle along off and on and do my own methods...which have not given me results I can be happy with, so I put down the pencils and switch to other art forms off and on. This book inspires me to work through the exercises with the author, read every word, and in short, finally get serious about colored pencil art.

I hope the author covers water-soluable colored pencils in a future volume.

Oh, and a big thank-you to the author about speaking out on using your OWN set-ups and photos, and not copying other's work (for gallery sales and shows), as well as not printing out photos and coloring over them and calling them original CP work. This is useful information that a lot of artists do not understand the legal implications of, and I for one am very grateful that all new CP artists will have a heads-up. This should give CP work added integrity in the art world.

If you're new to colored pencils like I am this is not the right book for you. It starts out covering a lot of things as if you have never used colored pencils, then moves onto advanced topics.

What bothers me is the book title and description saying: `incredible realism- with simple you-can-do-it-processes!'. Which is very misleading. Same thing when you look inside the book and see it starting with basics like colored pencil choices and paper choices. I assumed that it was going to progress from the very basics all the way through.

The highest rated 5-star review is titled: `Great for beginner to expert' and says: `If you have no experience with colored pencils or colored pencil realism, this book will take you from total beginner to gallery level brilliant hyper-realism'.

Almost every example goes something like this: I layered black, blue, red and green on the background and used yellow, pink, etc on the light areas. And it shows one small photo of the drawing. Then I applied a solvent and touched up areas. Then showing a beautiful completed photo. I would have appreciated to see way more steps and photos.

If you're a beginner I would recommend to start drawing and watching online tutorial videos. With the videos you can watch the artist drawing and pause the video while trying to recreate what they are doing. Once you understand color better and how to make decent looking drawings then look into this book.

I don't know who would disagree with me about that. You should be able to draw a decent drawing with colored pencils BEFORE you try to create ultra realistic effects. You need a lot of experience drawing and working with colors and so much else to create drawings that look ultra realistic. It's not just a matter of following along with the 'simple you-can-do-it-processes' in this book.

A more accurate title would be `advanced colored pencil techniques'.

Outstanding!

This is an outstanding and exciting book for those of us who love the control and feel of pencil drawing, but have longed for the intense colors, textures and realism of other media such as oils or acrylics - yet didn't want the expense and mess of those methods. Alyona's text is extremely well written - clear and helpful, with excellent illustrations. The examples of her art contained in the book are stunning. She also will provide pdf files via email of outlines and original photographs for the student to use in learning and practicing the techniques outlined in the text, for those who purchase the book and then contact her. Her correspondance with me clearly indicates her desire to instruct and share the joys of colored pencil with others, an enthusiasm quite clear throughout the book as well.

Excellent for summer enrichment and for preparing for second grade

My seven-year-old daughter will be entering second grade this fall and loves the Daily Math Problems for Grade Two. The questions cover the Math syllabus for grade two and she enjoyed working on the problems. I also wanted her to become familiar with word problems and Evan-Moor had this title in the series so I decided to try it out.

This book is a little more challenging in that it requires deeper thinking. Many of the problems are straight-forward but some require higher level thinking and help from the parent in helping the child understand what is being required - the operation involved, and how to work the problem. So far, my daughter is enjoying the challenge of working through the problems. The problems here cover the second grade Math syllabus in our state, Texas, and I think conform to other states' standards as well. This provides great practice for enrichment, tutoring, and homeschooling.

This book is awesome for word problems. Critical thinking is involved. They are work space included, and this is great cause it helps the child to visialise the answers through models.

Parphrase this one. Paul feeds his dog 1/2 a can of dog food today and he feeds him the other half tomorrow,how many days will tone can of food last. We drew the can,and it helped him to see the questions. That and I gave the dog half a can of dog food, LOL.

There is not a lot of repetition however, so if this is your child's first look at work problem get the Kumon books first and then this.

Excellent for review or extra practice

I bought this after my son's 2nd grade teacher recommended that we give him some extra word problem practice here at home.

The book is broken down so that there is one problem for each day during the week - this would make it very handy for teachers who like to put a problem on the board for students to work on before school in the morning. We are not using it that way - my son completes the two facing pages, which can be anywhere from 2 to 4 problems. Not too many, and not hugely complicated.

The book also has the Grade Two scope and sequence chart in the beginning, helpful for anyone looking for specific areas to work on. The problems range from simple addition/subtraction, to money and time.

I highly recommend this - not necessarily for *teaching*, but as a resource to assist in the learning process, and to review what has already been taught.

A must have for those who are exposed to derivatives

This book covers a broad range of financial instruments. Our firm is in the process of converting to OIS discounting. I found Lawrence Galitz's book to be very useful. This book provides guidance and insight into valuation techniques. A must have for any Risk Manager or anyone who is exposed to financial instruments.

He goes on to promote believing in oneself and following one's passions as a way to find fame and fortune. Thinking positive thoughts is all well and good, but when the author writes that optimistic thinking will clear up pimples or that avoiding news coverage about current events (because it will only attract bad thoughts) will keep you healthy and on the right track, it puts the credibility of this self-help guide in doubt. Then Harrington writes that whatever happens to you is a result of what you think about. "Victims of tragedy didn't ask for their fate (and they totally didn't deserve it). They probably didn't even know they were capable of attracting stuff. But still, there's an attraction. And that's because the law of attraction operates whether you know about it or not. People who don't know THE SECRET are attracting by default." This is cruel advice to give to an adolescent. If a 13-year-old who is being abused reads this, will he think that the abuse is his fault because he attracted it? What about a 17-year-old whose boyfriend hits her? Did she attract the violence? I think it could help any troubled teen *IF* you just get them to listen to it

I think it could and would help any troubled teen if you just get them to listen to it. In my case that didn't work. Got it for my friends daughter who is 14 and out-of-controll. But I don't believe she ever listen to the CDs. It is exactly like the Secret CDs for grown-ups except it uses the right language and examples for a teenagers life. Wish I would have had that advise myself when I was that young. You can bring the water to the horse but you can not force it to take a bath... Good Luck!

Every teen should read this book!!

Bought this book for my 15 year old daughter because I have read The Secret twice, I was excited to see there is a teen version. My daughter was not as excited but once she started reading it she said she really enjoyed it. She even started telling me about visualizing your goals and being thankful for everything, including things you don't have yet. These books are such a blessing. Every teen should read them!!

I really like how the book encourages them to be accountable for their lives and how they feel- just like the Secret does for adults. The quotes are great because she is seeing that these ideas are not just the opinion of the author but have been used for ages by many people she recognizes. It is also easier to have a discussion on things that aren't 'mom's crazy ideas'. We read, discuss, and the I encourage her to think about it more and take from it what she wants and see if she sees as time goes on how any of what she is learning can apply to things she experiences. I'm excited to see what she takes from it and how it has a positive impact.

The first line of the book is, "This is a true story." True or not, it is quite astonishing. Author Jon Ronson writes a column about family life for London's Guardian newspaper and has made several acclaimed documentaries. The Men Who Stare at Goats is his bizarre quest into "the most whacked-out corners of George W. Bush's War on Terror," as he puts it. Ronson is inspired when a man who claims to be a former U.S. military psychic spy tells the journalist he has been reactivated following the 9-11 attack. Ronson decides to investigate. His research leads him to the U.S. Army's strange forays into extra-sensory perception and telepathy, which apparently included efforts to kill barnyard animals with nothing more than thought. Ronson meets one ex-Army employee who claims to have killed a goat and his pet hamster by staring at them for prolonged periods of time. Like Ronson's original source, this man also says he has been reactivated for deployment to the Middle East.

Ronson's finely written book strikes a perfect balance between curiosity, incredulity, and humor. His characters are each more bizarre than the last, and Ronson does a wonderful job of depicting the colorful quirks they reveal in their often-comical meetings. Through a charming guile, he manages to elicit many strange and amazing revelations. Ronson meets a general who is frustrated in his frequent attempts to walk through walls. This exploration of the U.S. military's flirtation with the supernatural is at once funny and tragic. It reads like fiction, with plenty of dialogue and descriptive detail, but as Ronson's investigation into the government's peculiar past doings creeps into the present-and into Iraq-it will raise goose bumps. As Ronson reveals, a secret wing of the U.S. military called First Earth Battalion was created in 1979 with the purpose of creating "Warrior Monks," soldiers capable of walking through walls, becoming invisible, reading minds and even killing a goat simply by staring at it. Some of the characters involved seem well-meaning enough, such as the hapless General Stubblebine, who is "confounded by his continual failure to walk through his wall." But Ronson (Them: Adventures with Extremists) soon learns that the Battalion's bizarre ideas inspired some alarming torture techniques being used in the present-day War on Terror. One technique involves subjecting prisoners to 24 hours of Barney the Purple Dinosaur's song, "I Love You," and another makes use of the Predator, a small, toy-like object designed by military martial arts master Pete Brusso that can inflict a large amount of pain in many different ways ("You can take eyeballs right out... with this bit," Brusso tells Ronson). Ronson approaches the material with an open mind and a delightfully dry sense of humor, which makes this an entertaining, if unsettling, read. Indeed, as the events recounted here grow ever more curious-and the individuals Ronson meets more disturbing-it's necessary to remind oneself of Ronson's opening words: "This is a true story."

In the 1970s, the American government became very interested in psychic research and the potential military applications of paranormal abilities. The subject has since been tackled from a number of angles, but Ronson's angle is certainly the most entertaining. He interviews—or, in some cases, tries to interview—the people behind the formerly top-secret program (which did, yes, involve men staring at goats); he explains their mind-bending (and occasionally cutlery-bending) ideas; and explores the weirdly shocking ways in which some newfangled 1970s notions about psychological interrogation techniques have manifested themselves in today's War on Terror. The strangest thing about the book? The fact that this stuff really happened and that these people and their out-of-left-field ideas aren't the product of the author's imagination. --David Pitt

This is not an investigative report of conspiracy.

Some reviewers have completely missed the point. This is the author's journey researching an inane army experiment, and what manifestations may remain. This book is no more an investigative proof than Ronson's last novel was an argument for joining extremists. This book is Errol Morris, not Art Bell.

Wholly enjoyable and entertaining, it's hard to remember at times this is non-fiction, as some of the interviews seem insane. The presentation base comes from declassified goverment documents. However, they are not included, nor are there any footnotes, because Ronson is not trying to convince the reader of anything. He is writing about his interviews and conversations investigating the chronology of the "First Earth Battalion" manual. I believe Ronson started this project intending it to be much funnier (he is a comedian after all), but some of the subject matter and personas he found, though entertaining, aren't laughable: staring at a goat trying to kill sounds funny, but imagine the views of a person who wishes they had the ability to kill people with their mind. So it is a perspective on the legacy of a few persons relieved of common sense, that were given a little power and a budget.

You might enjoy this book if you:

- Find Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) funny.

- Like character documentaries, like those by Errol Morris.

- Enjoy psychology.

- Want a light introduction to a bizzare goverment-funded experiment.

You probably won't enjoy this book if you:

- Are looking for hard documentation on goverment conspiracy

- Believe our goverment would never do bad things to people

- Are uncomfortable with light critisism of George W. Bush

worth reading, but...

I had the hardest time deciding whether or not to read this book based on the various Amazon reviews. While I love a good conspiracy theory or two, I try to avoid books either written by conspiracy fanatics who have no objectivity, or conspiracy comics who treat the subject from a distance and use it to poke fun. As you can imagine, it's tough to find middle ground.

Goats ends up being worth reading for fitting somewhere into my realm of acceptibility, but sadly not enough to merit more than 3 stars. Ronson definitely keeps his distance during the first half of the book - as military men, some of whom are clearly unhinged to some extent, talk about crazy programs, Ronson makes it clear that he's not confirming or denying the allegations, merely quoting. And here, the book takes a comic tone and allows the reader to decide who to believe. On top of this, the book feels light, as if little research beyond interviews was done. Perhaps there's no other way to get this kind of information. Regardless, every chapter was more of a series of anecdotes than anything.

For the second half, the tone turns more serious as it becomes clear that there is a spider web connecting many of the participants of various army plots, and here Ronson suddenly suddenly gets too serious without enough evidence. I was fine with the tone change, and the book does lead you on the same inner feeling: at first, "this is nuts" to "hey, maybe there's something seriously wrong going on." The problem is that this is where we needed a lot more hardcore research. And yet the book still felt light and airy. I mean, Ronson didn't even bother to look up the name of the song or band that features the words "Burn Mother*ucker, Burn!" A small point, but one that will stand out to American readers as an obvious example of not doing all the homework. Also, the history of these programs is basically presented as Ronson discovered them, and the problem with this is that he backtracks and overlaps on himself a zillion times rather than present the material sequentially. Again, I see the reasons for taking us on the same path of discovery he did, but I'm not convinced it was for the best.

I think that there's a better book that could've been written buried in here somewhere, and what actually hit the page isn't necessarily bad. It just ultimately comes off as too light to be as important as it could have been. For those who were in my quandry of deciding whether to buy it, I recommend it, but I felt a lot better buying it used.

Confusing..but guess that the point

I've always been a fan of Jon Ronson's work - but this was really tough to read.
It's jumped around SO much and there were SO many characters that I just couldn't keep track. I tried to just let it wash over me when reading, but it was really frustrating. I guess that's part of the point of the book. Would be interested to see how this translated into the film.

Never give up on kindness.

Everyone once in a while you come across an author that changes everything for you, for me that has been Shayne McClendon. Shayne possesses a skill and talent that you rarely see in today's romantic writing scene. Honestly, I can't get enough. Her words are full of life, and love and beauty of spirit. Her characters are people you want in your life for real. Read and experience it for yourself in Madison and Alexander's story. A dramatic tale of tragedy and simple human kindness and never giving up. Read this, read The Barter System, read Completely Wrecked. You'll see.

Shayne's ability to get you right into the heads and hearts of her characters is nothing short of amazing. Every time I read another one of her books I'm absolutely floored at the emotions she pulls from me. I keep thinking it won't happen again... and again I find myself with a glass of wine, some chocolate and a huge box of tissues.
Take the time, read ALL of her works. You will not regret it.
