From the author of WAITING TO EXHALE...

Best friends Savannah, Gloria, Bernadine, and Robin have had their share of broken marriages, concessions, and the lessons learned from taking happiness for granted. Now, with each at a crossroads that will define their future, it’s time for these women to get their act together. They’re on their way to healing past hurts and to reclaiming the joy and the dreams they deserve. And they’re doing it with spirit, sass, and hard-earned faith in one another. It’s been fifteen years since they exhaled: now they’re finally learning to breathe.

From Publishers Weekly
Fifteen years after Waiting to Exhale, McMillan brings back Savannah, Gloria, Bernadine, and Robin--now in their 50s--for a disappointing and uninspired outing. As the story opens, Gloria is very happy, Savannah believes she might be happy, Bernadine is fighting addiction and losing ground, and single mother Robin is trying to resign herself to being alone while things at her job begin to unravel. Within the first few chapters, Gloria and Savannah are struck by disaster, and things go rapidly downhill from there for everyone. Most of the misery has to do with men who lie, steal, cheat, or disappear, or with adult children who face similar problems. Unfortunately, the beloved cast isn't given a story worthy of them; instead, this reunion reads like a catalogue of personal catastrophes annotated with very long, rambling discussions, with more emphasis on simple drama than character.

From Bookmarks Magazine
For McMillan fans (and they are legion, given the immense popularity of her novels and film adaptations), the publication of Getting to Happy will be welcome news. The novel is full of the juicy romantic entanglements, family dysfunction, and high drama that readers have come to anticipate. The novel is not without its shortcomings; most critics noted the occasional clunky writing and predictable plot line. After all, McMillan's characters are the same as before--older and heavier, perhaps, but not necessarily happier or wiser. Still, the novel is entertaining, escapist fare, and "Getting to Happy is pretty much required reading for anyone who cared about Waiting to Exhale" (Miami Herald).

From Booklist
Fifteen years after the success of Waiting to Exhale (including a film version), McMillan returns to her quartet of friends, living the black middle-class good life—with all its ups and downs—in Phoenix, Arizona. Savannah, who still narrates most chapters, is working for a local television station and slowly watching the thrill leach out of her marriage, which came late in life when she’d given up on her prospects. She’s now facing the realities of dating in middle age (from Viagra to online dating services). Her friend Robin is raising a teenage daughter and is so stressed by her boring accountant job that she’s hooked on shopping and an assortment of pills. Bernadine is recovering from the spectacular failure of her second marriage and coping with the knowledge that her daughter is gay. Gloria has a successful hair salon, beautiful grandchildren, and a wonderful marriage, until disaster strikes. They’re all facing the challenges of midlife, disappointment in love relationships, the fear of starting over personally and professionally, and the constant worry over their now adult and adolescent children. Fans of McMillan will enjoy catching up with this ensemble of friends and, as this novel has been optioned for a movie, can look forward to seeing the transition to film. --Vanessa Bush

"Sometimes we have to reinvent ourselves."
By Luan Gaines
Revisiting the ladies from Waiting to Exhale after fifteen years, McMillan explores the necessity of turning lemons into lemonade. Much has changed in the lives of the four Phoenix friends, Robin, Savannah, Gloria and Bernadine, marriages and romances run aground, careers in limbo, children grown and on their own. Although the women are as close as ever, each freely acknowledges that life has intruded, their meetings less frequent, the ups and downs of daily demands taking a toll. Now each of the friends is faced with a problem, some more devastating than others, challenged to reinvent themselves to survive the coming years. It is how these four work through their issues that so defines this particular group of friends, the energy, humor, loyalty and courage that it takes to face the world at fifty, with or without a man.

One by one, we are reintroduced to these fabulous, flawed creatures, from the still-beautiful but unattached Robin to the frustrated Savannah to a now bitter Bernadine and the ever-lovable Gloria. While near-grown children inspire both pride and awe, the demands of extended family and ex-husbands can get on anyone's last nerve. McMillan is on intimate terms with these characters, their fears, frustrations and reactions to the inevitable challenges they face. With her customary compassion for the plight of these larger-than-life women, married or single, this is a story that rings with authenticity. Life comes in all sizes and shapes, delivering joy and sorrow with equal abandon and these friends are spared none of the experiences that come with time. Once again, it is their love for one another that proves the most healing balm in any situation.

While these Phoenix residents have for the most part landed on their feet in troubled economic times, finances are irrelevant when the world weighs heavy on their shoulders. None has escaped unscathed the random cruelties of fate, but McMillan works her magic in the territory of the human spirit, the language of love and forgiveness a powerful remedy for grief. Reaffirming our belief in the healing power of friendship, from romance to career to the tragedy of Katrina, McMillan's characters are life-sized sisters of the heart. Luan Gaines/2010.

Didn't Get to Happy
By Ms PT
I was soooo looking forward to reading this book, but was soooo disappointed. I thought my 4 favorite characters were finally going to be "happy" and instead the book was about more doom and gloom for them all. Most important, the doom and gloom wasn't even drama that captured my interest. I was hoping that they all would have "grown" from the first book and it seemed to me they didn't. The one good thing about the book was that McMillan stayed true to the personalities of the characters from the first book.

Lackluster Sequel
By ishism
I'm going to keep this short and will try not to ruin the story for those who have not read this book.

I watched Waiting to Exhale in movie theaters several years before I ever read the book. By then I had read several other books by her as well. From the perspective of a writer, I loved how she constructed sentences and gradually revealed what made her characters tick. Her prose was funny, smart and sassy. Sadly, this book falls way short. Although Terry hasn't lost her touch with the dialogue, the story was often boring.

Because everyone was going through some kind of crisis, none of the problems got the treatment/resolution they deserved. It felt rushed and haphazard.

This book will no doubt be made into a movie. I might check it out on DVD.

Grit, by Duckworth Angela

In this instant New York Times bestseller, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed—be it parents, students, educators, athletes, or business people—that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.”

Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Duckworth, now a celebrated researcher and professor, describes her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance.

In Grit, she takes readers into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, teachers working in some of the toughest schools, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll.

Among Grit’s most valuable insights:

*Why any effort you make ultimately counts twice toward your goal
*How grit can be learned, regardless of I.Q. or circumstances
*How lifelong interest is triggered
*How much of optimal practice is suffering and how much ecstasy
*Which is better for your child—a warm embrace or high standards
*The magic of the Hard Thing Rule

Winningly personal, insightful, and even life-changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference.

Good stories, difficult to justify a full book
By Aaron Gabriel
I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.

There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.

Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

Save yourself a pile of time and just read her paper "Grit: perseverance and passion for long-term goals", Journal of personality and social psychology, 2007. This book is the results from there, plus a collection of exaggerations and cherry-picked anecdotes.

Effort Trumps Talent For Producing Success: Why You Need to Read Grit

Angela Duckworth’s book Grit is a treatise on the overblown idea that talent produces success. Duckworth, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has made a name for herself researching the idea of “grit” or the value of perseverance to predict success. The book is loaded with her studies, interviews with achievers, and personal observations as a parent.

I picked the book up originally for two reasons: First, I like the premise. As a former high school teacher and coach, I’ve always known that talent is not a good predictor of success. I’ll take a team full of hard workers that can persevere through pressure over a team of talented athletes any day. Second, I’ve felt my own professional perseverance waning in the last 18 months and I was hoping for a shot in the arm as I headed into my vision casting for 2017. I wanted to be reminded that talent is good, but grit is great.

Duckworth writes that in the equation of success, effort counts twice. It seems that society favors this formula for success: talent = achievement. In Duckworth’s studies, she found that there are actually two equations that predict achievement and it looks more like this:

Talent X Effort = Skill and Skill X Effort = Achievement

I could go on and on about the nuggets in this book but instead I’d just like to mention who should read this book.

• Parents- I was reminded of how responsible parents are for this trait
• Teachers – a good teacher can go a long way to encourage perseverance in a student
• Coaches – ditto from above
• Grandparents and caregivers of children
• Entrepreneurs – remember that your talent is only the beginning
• Writers – I think writers are particularly vulnerable to the trap of judging their success by numbers of books sold and concluding way too early that they are not talented. Read some of the stories of persevering success in this book!
• People stuck in jobs they don’t like
• High school career counselors- Every kids doesn’t not know what their passion is by 12th grade.
• Did I say parents?

Grit is a good read. The interviews with experts are fascinating. I now have a new respect for Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and especially for his mother. And I have always been a Pete Carroll fan.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–8—This collection includes selections by Avi, Sharon Creech, Susan Cooper, Patricia MacLachlan, Katherine Paterson, and Richard Peck. Each play was inspired by a theater-improv game in which the authors started with the selection of a single word. The pieces all include the following words: "dollop," "hoodwink," "Justin," "knuckleball," "panhandle," and "raven." Part of the fun is in seeing how these playwrights incorporate them into their stories. Most are humorous, and they all have many young characters. Production requirements range from easy to difficult. An engaging choice for literature and acting classes as well as general reading.—Terrilyn Fleming, Colby Public Schools, KS

What happens when you ask six Newbery Award winners to write one-act plays? Well, you get a book like ACTING OUT, and you get the potential for a lot of fun.

Award-winning authors Avi, Susan Cooper, Sharon Creech, Patricia MacLachlan, Katherine Paterson, and Richard Peck were asked to write one-act plays. They were given the freedom to write about anything, but there was one catch. Each author picked a word which was to be used in all six plays. The words chosen were dollop, hoodwink, Justin, knuckleball, panhandle, and raven. Their creative efforts are a pleasure to read.

The subjects of the plays include school topics like the detention room and a scary substitute, a mysterious voice, a moving, talking giant rock, a childhood Edgar A. Poe, and a selfish billionaire. Each script includes stage directions, character descriptions, and production hints.

ACTING OUT is successful as a casual reading experience as well as for its potential for actual staged performances. Readers will appreciate seeing a different side of some of their favorite Newbery authors.

Lights, camera, act!
By Heidi G
This collection of one-act plays, written by six winners of the Newbery Medal, will appeal to middle school students enrolled in a beginning drama class. My favorite is Sharon Creech's "The Bad Room," which revolves around students in detention; it reminds me a bit of the 1985 movie, "The Breakfast Club." One interesting spin is that each author was asked to choose a word to use in his/her play; all six words chosen were then used in each play. Students will recognize the names of the authors, making it more likely to draw them into the plays.

Fun, but not the greatest
By bargainshopper
The scripts in this book are fun, but definitely not great literature. I was hoping to find some scripts that would be easy and fun for middle schoolers. These plays were obviously geared toward a beginner audience, but in the end they were too simple and my students were not excited by them.

Simple and On-Target
By A Customer
Coach and player, parent and child: This is a great simple yet technically accurate book for bringing home the basics of hitting for the young player. I'm using it now for a winter clinic on hitting (and pitching).
And at the price I saw on Amazon, its far cheaper than some baseball 'deals' available at some baseball coaching web sites.

With So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood, his first publication since winning the 2014 Nobel Prize in literature, Patrick Modiano adds a new chapter to a body of work whose supreme psychological insight and subtle, atmospheric writing have earned him worldwide renown. This intense, sinuous novel, now translated into twenty-five languages, penetrates the deepest enigmas of identity and compels us to ask whether we ever know who we truly are.

“An author with a virtuoso’s command of language, equally at ease with the simple and the complex, the precise and the evocative.” — New York Review of Books

“Modiano’s most recent novel is a work of melancholic beauty . . . Sincere, shattering, magnificent.” — L’Express

“A small gem . . . Immediately striking and affecting.” — Elle France

reference points in shifiting sand
By Thomas F. Dillingham
While Patrick Modiano's novels often provide the pleasures of a good detective story, with the frustrations and pleasures of tracking bits of evidence to their sources and seeking their significance. the real subject of many of his novels is the uncertainty, instability, indeed the untrustworthiness of memory. In case we forget, he reminds us through his characters that we regularly forget, often because, whether consciously or absent-mindedly, we prefer to dismiss or repress memories that are inconvenient or uncomfortable. In this novel, the central character, Daragane, receives a phone call from a stranger, telling him that the stranger has found an address book that he believes Daragane must have lost. He offers to return it, and this sets in motion a process of recovery not only of the outdated address book, but of memories of childhood that Daragane might just as soon have left in the dark recesses of memory.

As we expect from Modiano, the evocations of places and of more or less mysterious people, some of whom the narrator encounters for the first time, others, to his surprise, are familiar from his past, are all presented with precise details that make us feel we could walk through Paris streets and encounter the same images. And the shocks of "retrieved" memory are almost as sharp for readers as they are for the narrator who does not expect them.

This is the eleventh of Modiano's novels that I have read, though only the third that I have read in English translation. On the whole, I prefer reading his work in French, since the connotations of so much of his language, especially in dialogue and descriptions of places, feel much more evocative, but this translator has done a good job of conveying the peculiarities of Modiano's style. One warning for readers of detective fiction may be in order--though Modiano uses the techniques and some of the standard motifs of detective fiction, one thing he rarely does is supply a solution. We are often left on the final page still stumbling in that "shifting sand," with a continued sense of foreboding. It's possible to "figure out" on one's own, but seldom to feel confident that the "answer" has been found. Who was that man who returned the address book?

Modiano is always intriguing, often exasperating, but in a good way. I recommend this.

The mystery of memory is explored in this short novel.
By Russell Fanelli
I had not read any of Nobel Prize winning author Patrick Modiano’s work so I thought this new mystery novel was a good place to start. I was wrong. Calling So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood a mystery novel is more than a stretch; it is false advertising. Yes, an unsolved murder did happen long ago and far away, but our main character, Jean Daragane, an elderly writer, never systematically investigates the crime and no resolution is forthcoming.

Instead, Jean goes “in search of lost time.” At the very beginning of the novel Gilles Ottolini, a minor character who soon disappears, calls Jean to tell him that Gilles has found Jean’s address book. Jean agrees to meet Gilles at a cafe to retrieve his book. Gilles’ friend Chantal, who plays an important role in the first half of the novel, accompanies Gilles to the rendezvous. When they meet, Gilles asks Jean to help him get information about a very old news item. Jean tells Gilles that he remembers little about any of the people involved in the news story and gets up and leaves. But Gilles is persistent and calls Jean to continue to ask for his help. When Gilles leaves to go to a casino, Chantal becomes his intermediary and continues to interact with Jean.

This somewhat confused and not very interesting start to the novel is important only to begin Jean’s search in his memory for his past as a young child growing up in Paris. Now our author Modiano is on more comfortable ground. Jean begins to remember various people and events that took place when he was a child. He revisits old neighborhoods and talks with people who have some knowledge of his friends and family. Slowly his memory returns and we meet important people who played a major role in his upbringing.

Memory is often a mystery and must be approached with care and caution. How certain are we that what we remember actually occurs in the way we imagine? The events from our past that shape who we are as people may be muted or exaggerated, but rarely will they be an accurate representation of what actually happened. And so it is with Jean, who keeps digging deeper and deeper into his past and the strange events that became so important a part of his formation as a person.

So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood may not be a mystery in a traditional sense, but it does explore well the mystery of memory. Many readers may enjoy Jean’s walk down memory lane. Patrick Modiano is a skillful writer who engages our attention and involves us in Jean’s search. This is a short novel and I found that I was somewhat surprised that the story ended so soon and so unexpectedly. I think three and a half stars represents well my overall response to this novel. Recommended with reservations noted.

Modiano continues to practice his own form of 'counter realism'
By Arheddis Vaarkingjaab
Modiano's narratives are uniquely convoluted with a shifting timeline that dances back and forth over as many as 50 years. In this case, the central character becomes involved with mysterious people who seem to come out of his past experience and force him to relive his own history against his tendency to retire into his isolation. As one reads, he finds himself thumbing back to refresh memory about a particular person or event in much the same way as the protagonist is doing. Like other Modiano works, "So You Don't Get Lost" is more about how fiction works in relation to autobiography than about any particular subject or action. "Painterly" is the term that comes to mind, and one is reminded of some of Samuel Becket's work, as well as Robbe Grillet and other avantguarde writers of the late 20th century. This is literature as art form, not storytelling, or at least not storytelling of the sort we are accustomed to in more pedestrian fiction. I call it "counter realism," definitely worthy of his Nobel Prize.

very basic
By Hank Prokop
If you have general knowledge this guide/book isn't for you. All the info written can be found in your basic how to places. If you're just starting out on Android or XBMC and need very basic set ups then it could be helpful. It touches lightly over most subjects. So if this is your first android device or you're installing XBMC/Kodi for the 1st time and know nothing then it may help.

Not worth tour time
By Tim Wells
There was too much filler and precious little value in the book. Several parts were copied almost word for word from the Kodi Wiki. Look elsewhere for information.
