Born and brought up in New Delhi, Sakshi Salve holds a bachelor s degree in business management from the University of Exeter, UK. After working for one year at a reputed fashion house in London, she had two stints in the banking sector at UBS and Barclays, following which she moved back to New Delhi to set up a lifestyle store at the DLF Emporio mall with her mother. Her love for fine dining took her back to London, where she completed a comprehensive culinary course from the reputed Le Cordon Bleu. She also spent a summer in New York City and completed an intense scriptwriting course from New York University.

Sakshi loves to travel, is a voracious reader and is instinctively drawn to all things spiritual. She divides her time between New Delhi and London, and is now planning to pursue full-time writing and entertainment.

Really fun

It was fun to read. Some of it was sort of dry in places and the humour was sort of over your head types of funny unless you understand about Bollywood and Indian culture. I loved it. Would recommend to friends definitely just have a WiFi connection handy so you can Google up small things. The book is in english but has some hindi phrases and sentences

Honesty is imperative. You must know from the start: I love this deck. My heart was lost to it almost a year ago when I was in Italy working in the Lo Scarabeo offices. Riccardo Minetti, the editor there, pulled out Cristina’s original artwork and that was, as they say, that. Later, the little flame in my heart was fanned―again by Riccardo―into a bonfire when I was asked to write the dreaded Little White Booklet. If you think using those books is frustrating, try writing them! Luckily, Riccardo turned what could have been a wretched experience into a magical one. He knows that my "mental deck" is the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. He knows that it is my wont to force all decks into that mold. Tragically Cute

I thought I would be so in love with these cards and connect immediately with them, but I was wrong. =[

That being said, it is of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tradition, but not a 'clone'.
The artwork is pretty fascinating, and cute, but the images do not seem to convey traditional meanings very well.
There's lots of face-paint on the human/fairy/part-animal characters, funky Suns & Moons, quirky animal friends, and peculiar environments to keep you entertained.
It's not VERY sad/mopey/morose, but sometimes certain cards have that Deviant Moon Tarot tortured-soul thing going on.

The LWB (Little White Book) is next to useless. Most of the "meanings" found within are verbal-summaries of the artwork. I can SEE what is being presented, but what does it MEAN!? Some "meanings" are simply questions. Yes, it could force you to dig deeper/use your intuition; but if you wanted to find some concrete answers or are new to Tarot, it's pretty infuriating.

There are some pop-culture references found within the artwork: The Hermit screams Rob Zombie to me, Yoda makes a crystal- like appearance in Strength, the Ace of Wands card reminds me of James and the Giant Peach, the 9 of Pentacles is Cat Woman, 10 Pentacles reminds me of Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, and the Knave Pentacles reminds me of Willy Wonka.

The box is pretty awesome (the standard, but awesome Lo Scarabeo design), where there is no bottom flap to destroy your cards when you tuck them away inside the box.

I really wanted to love this deck, and I so thought I would, but we just don't connect. For now...

Lovely Redo for Tarot

This isn't a typical Rider-Waite clone deck. A fair number of the illustrations depart from the standard symbology, but not so much that the interpretaions are totally lost! You shouldn't have too much trouble adapting to the deck for doing readings from.

But that's not really why I dig this deck. It's the look. The colors are vivid, but not overly cheerful. I read a review where someone felt that it was the deck that Tim Burton never made, and I think that is an apt description. It's got some gloomy outlook amidst the more upbeat cards, and the drawings are rather charming. It's not as far out there as the Deviant Moon Deck either; it's stylised without departing from certain Tarot norms.

Additionally the card stock is a good wieght and the finish is not overly slick making them easy to handle. Lo Scarabo's boxes have a different fold at the bottom that doesn't roughen up the cards when you put them back in. The little white book is a bit on the sparse side, but that's standard. The meanings given in it do seem to vary a bit from what you learn elsewhere, but I found them to be relatively easy incorporated twists of other decks.

All in all, charming without being overly cheerful or theme interpretive.

A Surrealistic Journey into the Twilight!

From samples over the internet, these cards "called" to me. I didn't know exactly why, but then it hit me. "Wow! This is Tim Burton meets Tarot", I thought. It's undeniable that the imagery in the Tarot of the Sweet Twilight seems to be taken out of movies like "The Night Before Christmas" and "Corpse Bride". However, this is not just a rehash of the Rider Tarot in the spirit of those movies, but an ingeniously designed deck by Christina Benintende.

The cards on this deck are bordered black, with a reversible back to behold. The imagery losely follows the Rider tradition in a surrealistic fashion. With muted but contrasting colors, each card sucessfully captures the environment at twilight. At times, a sun and a moon will be seen at opposite ends of a card. The characters are languish being of pale skin that at all times captivate your imagination with their hidden emotions. However, this is by no mean a depressing deck.

Each card on this deck is labeled top and bottom on six languages including English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Dutch. The Major Arcana are numbered at the top with stylish purple roman numerals, starting at 0 with The Fool. No matter how much I try, I won't be able to make justice to these cards. Instead, I can say that my mind was full of wonder as I enjoyed them. Is there a scythe as the shadow of the skeletal figure in Death? Is that an effigy of Yoda at the bottom left corner of Strength?

The suits in the Minor Arcana (chalices, pentacles, wands and swords) are subtly integrated into the imagery. The pip cards are fully illustrated and numbered at the top. There are a lot of interesting cards in the Minor Arcana like Ace of Cup with a woman bathing in a cup, Nine of Pentacles with a Catwoman look a like in view, and Knave of Wands with a troubadour with a spanish guitar to mention a few.

The only disappointing part of this deck is perhaps the Little White Book that comes with it. If you wanted to know what inspired the designer, you won't find an answer there. However, the descriptions were to point of the imagery on the cards.

If you like surrealistic art and tarot, this is probably a good deck for you. I suspect this is a deck I will enjoy for a long while.

Allende's people are warm-blooded, original, memorable. A simple lyricism evokes European emigres to South America; social climbers; outlaws; schoolteachers; Indians; a nearly indefatigable imagination explores the critical moments in these figures' lives. Many of the stories build on the intricate attachments of unlikely lovers, such as a dictator and the foreign woman he abducts or a criminal and a judge's wife. Born in Chile but now living in Northern California, Allende is the first female Latin American novelist to become well-known to the American reading public. Her novels-- The House of the Spirits ( LJ 4/15/85), Of Love and Shadows ( LJ 5/1/87), and Eva Luna ( LJ 10/15/88)--are frequently compared to those of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The title character of the third book narrates the 24 stories in this collection, which, though scattered with familiar names, places, and images, is an independent work, not a sequel. Isabel Allende never ceases to amaze me. With each story I feel... deeper, more introspective, more whimsical, more... More.

This book was perfect for me. A collection of short stories that draw me in immediately. Short enough to be the last thing completed before turning off your light. Perfect for setting stages for your dreams. It's like reading a Kahlo painting, that mystique, that magic. This book will be my gift to all of my very closest of friends.

Nice collection, though not Allende's best work

Solid collection of Allende short stories as told by Eva Luna to a lover. Not the best pieces by Allende, but nice pieces to read in bed or casually here and there. Certainly not recommended to get lost (try Hemingway's short stories for this or for an Allende rec - House of Spirits).

About the Author

David E. Cooper is a former lecturer in philosophy, having taught at Oxford University and the universities of Miami, London, and Surrey before being appointed as professor of philosophy at Durham University. He has been the president or chair of several learned societies, including the Mind Association, the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, and the Friedrich Nietzsche Society, and has served on the editorial boards of various journals, including Contemporary Buddhism. He is the author of several books, including Metaphor; Existentialism: A Reconstruction; The Measure of Things: Humanism, Humility and Mystery; Meaning (Central Problems of Philosophy); A Philosophy of Gardens; and World Philosophies: An Historical Introduction.
