As a student of communication, I found Egolf's book, Forming Storming Norming Performing: Successful Communication in Groups and Teams to be the quintessential read on small group communication. Egolf covers all the bases and engages the reader at a level that is both refreshing and informational.
It is evident that Egolf is dedicated to communications research. Egolf unpacks the many layers of communication in such a way as to make the content readable, understandable, applicable, and most importantly implementable.
As with many people, I read books on communication so as to better understand the process and to improve and perfect my own communication skills. Developing good communications skills serves to improve professional interactions as well as personal. Egolf's book is a comprehensive, one-stop shopping, jam-packed book on the whys and wherefores of small group communication. Who knew that so much is going on when meeting with a small group of colleagues to perform some task or assignment? I will forever be so much more cognizant of my interactions as well as those of my colleagues. I will be aware of and watch for verbal and non-verbal cues whether meeting face-t-face or participating in some form of computer mediated communications. Egolf covers the gamut.
Of particular interest, are the Egolf's chapters on leadership and the role that leadership plays in realizing positive outcomes and high performance in the group's project. Egolf illuminates the fact that it is not enough to just create a task group and charge them with completing the task. It is incumbent upon the leader to pave the way by providing a clear mission and to delineate expectations. Moreover, it is the job of the leader to provide for any interpersonal and administrative needs the group may require. Administrative needs may include leadership that embraces and encourages the use of any available new technology that will provide the group with every opportunity to succeed. That is a new take on leadership-at least new to me. It stands to reason that such a simple concept as mastering the new available technology of the time is such an impactful way to not only communicate in new ways but also may be the path to growing my business.
