I LOVE integrating the word building into each chapter.
I think it will make the word building much more relevant
to students. –Tricia Berry,
Hamilton College
I have students ranging in age from 18 to 50s. It would be
hard to find a writing style to fit them all, but I feel this book
would do the job. –Judy Anderson,
Coastal Carolina Community College
The illustrations and photos are awesome. –Cynthia Thompson,
Alamance Community College
The author takes the medical terminology textbook up
another level. –James Hudacek,
Lorain County Community College
It is geared to the whole person rather than just a clinical
approach to anatomy and physiology. It’s the “rest of the
story” that adds the interest and gives depth.
–Juanita R. Bryant,
Cabrillo College and Sierra College
Excellent book. –Paula Hagstrom,
Ferris State University
The wide diversity of subjects in the photos, and the
excellent diversity of artwork was way beyond my
expectations. Most books do not use enough visuals to
break up the written word, but I think this text is generous
in the use of color and visuals. –Susan Buboltz ,

SOMETHING DIFFERENT You may have already noticed that there is something different about this book. Perhaps by examining the cover and thumbing through the pages, you have taken note of the abundance of real-world images. Maybe you have discovered some of the practice exercises that abound within these pages, placing you in the hypothetical role of an actual health care provider. Or perhaps you have already begun exploring the revolutionary CD-ROM that is packaged inside the back cover, rich with highly engaging and interactive activities that add a unique dimension to your learning. As you begin this exciting and important journey into the world of medicine we offer you a single promise—that you will soon become immersed in a new, exciting experience. And therefore we feel it is fitting for this textbook to follow suit. As a healthcare professional you will never be sitting on the sidelines. Your hard work, knowledge, competence, and interpersonal skills will have a direct impact on patient services throughout your career. Therefore it is with this spirit that we wish to empower you to affect others with the fruits of your learning. And thus, we encourage you to immerse yourself in the language and culture of healthcare. THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK As part of your training, you will learn how to construct and deconstruct medical terms using their basic elements, called word parts. So let us start at the beginning by examining the title of this book, Medical Language. Medical Medicine is the drama of life and death, and few subjects are as compelling, profound, or worthy of study. This book is about real medicine. As you know, real medicine affects real patients—their lives, their families, and their futures. As a health professional, no matter which aspect of patient care you touch, you will have great responsibilities. Therefore, we feel it is our responsibility to provide you with as realistic a view possible of medicine today. Here are some examples of how we have done this: • The majority of the images in this book incorporate medical illustrations and photographs that include a diverse array of real people, instead of cartoon- like illustrations. • Among the many features on the accompanying CD-ROM, you will find an exercise called Medical Language Spoken Here that challenges you to listen to and interpret authentic physician dictation courtesy of Health Professions Institute, creator of the SUM program and a leader in the medical transcription industry. • Instructors who require this book will have access to a collection Real People, Real Medicine videos that were filmed in association with this book to profile a variety of health care workers on the job. • As part of our respect for real medicine, and the importance of getting it right the first time, we have made a commitment to accuracy. The author draws on her 30 years of experience as a nurse, medical transcriptionist, health information manager, and educator to provide accurate and complete information throughout. We have also engaged the technical editing services of XX physician specialists who have carefully reviewed the chapters that correspond to their respective practices. Language A language is a method of communicating and an expression of the people, events, and culture it represents. This book is about the language of medicine. As opposed to simply memorizing vocabulary words, the complete experience that this book offers is the opportunity to embrace the world of medicine, just as if you were learning a foreign language. Like traveling to Tokyo for a year to learn Japanese, the goal here is for you to become immersed in the sights, sounds, and even the tastes and smells of a new culture. This book surrounds you with context that brings the words to life. A LIVING LANGUAGE You will not be a passive reader of this book. Instead, you will be challenged to listen, speak, write, watch, respond, examine, think, and make connections. You should consume this book by writing notes in it and filling in your answers. By being an active participant in your own learning process, the concepts presented here will come alive in vibrant color and full texture. This book is a living document about a living language. Throughout the features of this book and the accompanying multimedia resources you will get a true taste of the world of medicine in living color. You will notice that, unlike most other medical terminology texts, the chapters in this book are titled by medical specialties, rather than by body systems. This reflects the real world of medicine. For example, people with skin conditions will visit a dermatologist, not an "integumentary system specialist". That's why the related chapter in our book is titled "Dermatology". A patient with heart problems will be treated in a hospital's Cardiology Department and not in a "cardiovascular system department". Our decision to present the chapters of the book in this manner is an example of our commitment to make this book a realistic reflection of actual medicine in the real world. This distinction from conventional texts was tested extensively during development of this book and we are gratified by the overwhelming support (over 75%) for this chapter presentation. IMMERSE YOURSELF! You are about to begin an interactive learning experience between you, this book, and your instructor one that will equip you with a vital tool and inspire you to become a true consumer of medical language. The goal of this book is to connect with you, to engage your visual auditory and kinesthetic senses, to stimulate you, and fuel your complete understanding of the topic. So as you engage in this multisensory experience within these pages, remember that we are not encouraging you to merely discover, learn, know, or even understand, the information. Instead we want you to live it! So dig in, dive in, and become immersed!
