Amazon.com Review
For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig.

As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he begins his third year at Hogwarts explains why the officials let him off easily. It seems that Sirius Black--an escaped convict from the prison of Azkaban--is on the loose. Not only that, but he's after Harry Potter. But why? And why do the Dementors, the guards hired to protect him, chill Harry's very heart when others are unaffected? Once again, Rowling has created a mystery that will have children and adults cheering, not to mention standing in line for her next book. Fortunately, there are four more in the works. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
Rowling proves that she has plenty of tricks left up her sleeve in this third Harry Potter adventure, set once again at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Right before the start of term, a supremely dangerous criminal breaks out of a supposedly impregnable wizards' prison; it will come as no surprise to Potter fans that the villain, a henchman of Harry's old enemy Lord Voldemort, appears to have targeted Harry. In many ways this installment seems to serve a transitional role in the seven-volume series: while many of the adventures are breathlessly relayed, they appear to be laying groundwork for even more exciting adventures to come. The beauty here lies in the genius of Rowling's plotting. Seemingly minor details established in books one and two unfold to take on unforeseen significance, and the finale, while not airtight in its internal logic, is utterly thrilling. Rowling's wit never flags, whether constructing the workings of the wizard world (Just how would a magician be made to stay behind bars?) or tossing off quick jokes (a grandmother wears a hat decorated with a stuffed vulture; the divination classroom looks like a tawdry tea shop). The Potter spell is holding strong. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-Isn't it reassuring that some things just get better and better? Harry is back and in fine form in the third installment of his adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His summer with the hideous Dursley family is cut short when, during a fit of quite understandable rage, he turns his Aunt Marge into an enormous balloon and then runs away. Soon, it becomes quite apparent that someone is trying to kill him; even after Harry is ensconed in the safety of fall term at Hogwarts, the attacks continue. Myriad subplots involving a new teacher with a secret, Hermione's strangely heavy class schedule, and enmity between Ron's old rat, Scabbers, and Hermione's new cat, Crookshanks, all mesh to create a stunning climax. The pace is nonstop, with thrilling games of Quidditch, terrifying Omens of Death, some skillful time travel, and lots of slimy Slytherins sneaking about causing trouble. This is a fabulously entertaining read that will have Harry Potter fans cheering for more.

About to fall apart
By hailey
I am very upset with the turn out of this book. When I read it i'm going to be afraid that it's going to fall apart because it already is. For something this worn down I would have rather paid half of what I did.

Spoilers!

“I solemnly sear that I am up to no good.” (ch. 10 pg. 192)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry and his friends through the excitement that is their third year at Hogwarts. In the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bed sheets- as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Drusley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. During a visit from Aunt Marge, Vernon and Harry make a deal, if he can keep Hogwarts a secret, Vernon will sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmead on the weekends. Unfortunately that goes out the window when Marge insults Harry’s family and he accidentally inflates her, whoops. The Knight Bus then picks up Harry after he leaves the house suddenly, but not after seeing something peculiar in the bushes…
The main conflict of this novel is the fact that escaped prisoner Sirius Black is on the loose and dangerous. Dementors have made Hogwarts their home for the year and even made a little pit stop on the Hogwarts Express to make sure Sirius Black wasn’t aboard. While they didn’t find the prisoner on the train, they did find Harry, because of the sorrow and death he has already witnessed the dementors were drawn to him. The mysterious person (who we find out to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher) is at the ready to produce a Patronus charm, which is used to ward of dementors with a happy memory.
The school year starts and the dementors are not respecting the boundaries that Dumbledore has put into place. They even disrupt a Quidditch match and send Harry flying off of his broom and his Nimbus 2000 into the Whomping Willow. Harry get used to his new classes and the frequent disappearance and reappearance of Hermione as she seems to be taking more class than any average witch or wizard can handle. Third year is when students start taking Divination and it’s not Harry’s favorite subject to say the least. Professor Trelawney often tells Harry he is in grave danger after finding the Grim in his cup, and she becomes overcome with a prophecy when they are alone in the classroom. "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight... before midnight... the servant... will set out... to rejoin... his master..." (ch.16 pg.324)
The story concludes with Harry, Ron and Hermione using Hermione’s Time Turner to not only save Hagrid’s friend Buckbeak, but also Harry’s innocent godfather Sirius Black, who has spent the last 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. With the help of their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (who is also a werewolf!) Remus Lupin; Harry finds out more about his parents past and how their secret keeper and friend Peter Pettigrew betrayed them.
This is easily my favorite Harry Potter book out of the seven. I’d give it ten out of five stars if I could. It introduced me to my favorite character of the series (Remus Lupin) and helped to continue the story of Harry Potter and helped Harry find out more about his parents before they died. He also was reconnected with his godfather and James’ best friend Sirius Black.

A Breath of High-Octane Oxygen!
By Amazon Customer
Who’d have thought that two warring neighbors in an upscale neighborhood (Malibu, CA) could escalate their squabbles to an epic level? I spent a lot of time wondering "Blimey, could this work in everyday life?"

Hey folks, here’s my tuppenceworth. Two memorable characters: One good, a sophisticated lawyer, but still a “babe in the woods” compared to the other, a crafty son-of-a-gun, more cunning than the Horned One himself, and this bloke, well, he wears his charisma thick on his sleeve. So I’m thinking, have we finally entered the age of the thinking thriller? If one discounts the purple prose pouring unctuously from Machiavelli’s lips (which incidentally fits this impostor’s persona to a T), it’s a bloody brilliant novel—a novel exploiting a novel concept! The plot builds momentum like an opus. If you must know, by the time it reached its crescendo towards chapter 35 or so, I was on my feet cheering, ready with a standing ovation and a bottle of Michelob in my right hand—cf. last chapter. All right, I’m a bit of a cat lover, too, but still!

I’ve got to warn you, though, or you'll find yourself sneaking moments out of your busy day to decrypt the meaning of life using Machiavelli’s clever word acrobatics, which goes by a fancy French name for voodoo-something-or-other, but is nonetheless an eminently patentable formula if you ask me! In fact, I think I've just glimpsed the writing on the wall, and if I’m not deluded it reads: CHASE’S BOOK GARNERS PLAUDITS ON GLOBAL SCALE!

For a jaded bloke like myself, reading Know Thy Neighbor was like a breath of high octane oxygen after spending hours in a cigar smoke-filled room.

Incorrigible Book Lover Paul Gardner

Beyond America's Grasp: A Century of Failed Diplomacy in the Middle East, by Stephen P. Cohen

Middle East expert Stephen P. Cohen traces U.S. policy in the region from the breakup of the Ottoman Empire to the present. A century ago, there emerged two dominant views regarding the uses of America's power: Woodrow Wilson urged America to promote national freedom and self-determination―in stark contrast to his predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt, who had advocated a vigorous foreign policy based on national self-interest.

In concise, pointed chapters, Cohen offers a lucid primer on the complexities of the region and an eye-opening commentary on how different Middle East Countries have struggled to define themselves in the face of America's stated idealism and its actual realpolitik.

Starred Review. In what should become required reading for those interested in the Middle East, Cohen, director of the Institute of Middle East Peace and Development, provides a richly detailed history of diplomacy in the region and its implications for current relations. The book begins with Woodrow Wilson's idealistic initiatives, which germinated into a confused legacy [that] continues to be at the heart of the problem between the United States and the Middle East. Cohen takes a tour of major players and key events, including Egypt and its nationalist movement, Iran under British imperialism, the roots of a Saudi-U.S. alliance and the evolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Cohen provides broad suggestions for contemporary diplomacy, generally emphasizing the importance of avoiding a one-size-fits-all policy. He discusses policies in the region of both Bush administrations, and remains timely in presaging the new administration's diplomatic message. When Cohen concludes, To overcome despair over these relationships, which is now so common, requires the elaboration in our imagination of a best-case scenario, he sounds prescient, and the rigorously researched history he provides make his words ring true. “With his brilliant analysis of the bungled leadership, diplomatic miscalculations, and cultural blindness that have marked U.S. policy in the Middle East . . . Cohen untangles the roots of anti-Americanism in the Arab world. . . . This trenchant, hopeful book should be compulsory reading for President Obama and every member of Congress.” ―Letty Cottin Porgrebin, author of Deborah, Golda, and Me: Being Female and Jewish in America

“A big-picture overview of the long-teetering relationship between America and the Arab nations . . . Cohen makes a magnificent case for the ‘emotional impact' of Arab defeat in the face of Israeli force, while at the same time scolding those nations for persistence in ‘self-definition by negation of the other.' very accessible - a valuable, intriguing perspective
By Naturale
This is a refreshing and very readable book which gives a unique perspective on the Middle East. It clearly explains the impact on the region by the Western Powers and the impact of European colonialism and U.S. naivete. Also, Cohen takes each Arab country individually to show its own needs and influences, and we can begin to stop seeing the Middle East as simply one anti-American Islamist bloc. Is peace possible, not only between Israel and its neighbors but between the Arab countries and the U.S.? You need not reach the same conclusions as Cohen but his lucid details give an understanding that we in the West are in great need of. This is a valuable book and very pertinent.

Vanguar for US and ME relations education/understanding
By Luis
This is a great book to help those who limit their knowledge of the ME within US news sources. Everyone that wants to work in any way with people from some of these countries it will be very beneficial for your interaction. This book was excellent except from my limited perspective in the complex reality of the Israel/ Palestinian relationship it seemed a fraction favoring Israel. Conclusion is that books like this should be part of the education of this society.

Go behind the headlines
By Thomas Mitchell
With over 40 years of experience in the Middle East, Prof. Stephen Cohen is well equipped to give us the basic relevant history and culture in the Middle Eastern countries most relevant to American policy: Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran. Occasionally he brings in personal anecdotes but most of the information comes from the extensive bibliography found in the back of the book. Cohen offers no magic formulas or solutions for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for rebuilding Iraq or for anything else for that matter. But for those without a background in Middle Eastern studies this is a good place to go for relevant information to flush out the headlines from World War I forward.

Cicely Saunders: Selected Writings 1958-2004, by Cicely Saunders

Cicely Saunders is universally acclaimed as a pioneer of modern hospice care. Trained initially in nursing and social work, she qualified in medicine in 1958 and subsequently dedicated the whole of her professional life to improving the care of the dying and bereaved people. Founding St. Christopher's Hospice in London in 1967, she encouraged a radical new approach to end of life care combining attention to physical, social, emotional and spiritual problems, brilliantly captured in her concept of "total pain." Her ideas about clinical care, education and research have been hugely influential, leading to numerous prizes and awards in recognition of her humanitarian achievements. This book includes a selection of Cicely Saunders' most important writings throughout a period of over forty years.
Full articles, chapters, editiorials, reviews, and commentaries include important clinical themes relating to the care of dying people such as pain and symptom management, issues of communication and truth telling, and the needs of particular patient groups, such as those with cancer and other diseases. The book includes pieces that reflect on the wider development of the palliative care field and on policy and organizational issues. Some of the papers take up the theme of spiritual care at the end of life, as well as the question of euthanasia, raising in turn issues of a wider theological and philosophical nature.
The articles are written for a multi-disciplinary audience and will be of enormous interest to many professionals now working in palliative care. The collection will become a key work of reference for those interested in the evolution of hospice and palliative care and will serve as an important sourcebook of many currently hard to obtain publications by the acknowledged founder of the modern hospice movement. This book will also stand as a remarkable testimony to the personal contribution of Cicely Saunders and the influence she has had upon the modern field of palliative and end of life care.

And many more questions can be answered by the technique of dynamic system simulation. The book has ample of examples, is very well written, and is easy to follow.
One's imagination is the only limiting factor in applying the techniques of Dynamo. It could be applied to study farming, ecological balance, impact of wrath or blessings of mother nature such as drought or rain, population shifts, and much more.
For a serious student of simulation technique, I strongly recommend this book.

Jaco licks!!!
By Robbiosys
Jaco's music will span the ages, no doubt. This instructional guide is good for learning the notes he played on the selected song list. But...no Jaco. Musicians on the accompaning CD are excellent in thier reproductions. But...no Jaco. Something to aspire to though. Good for what it is. Thanks!

Written in treble clef! Not good.
By Richard M
Almost all of the tunes are written in treble clef which defeats the purpose of buying a playalong book for bass. I've put it away on the shelf and haven't touched it - not happy with it. Not that I can't read treble clef (I'm fluent at it), but I wanted to focus on my bass clef abilities.

Review
"...The Museum Experience is one of the most stimulating and readable books I have ever encountered. ... I have been amazed by the lack of clearly presented analyses to help educators be more effective. This book goes far to fill that void. America's museums have contributed much to public learning. They can and must contribute much more. The Museum Experience is an invaluable means to that end. This compact volume is a lucid and germane enumeration of the basic issues of visitor learning. It will have resonance for every museum professional - because every museum professional is vitally concerned with the museum's central role as a center of public learning."...-From the foreword by Willard L. Boyd, President Emeritus, Field Museum of Natural History

"...I was amazed at how well [The Museum Experience] held up over 20 years and how many insights I relearned. ... I think it's still an essential text for the field and one that many people could learn a lot from in present form in 2011."...
- Nina Simon, Museum 2.0

"...I love this book! I still think it is one of the most 'read-able' and applicable books in our field. It is perfect for students or professionals, particularly those who are new to the visitor perspective."... -Kris Morrissey, Director, Museology Graduate Program, University of Washington

"...Rereading this book really brought home to me what a classic it is. The core sense of it is still completely relevant; it still holds up completely as one of the three or four essential primers for museum professionals. Another part of the beauty of the book is its brevity and, hence, its clarity."...
-Daniel Spock, Minnesota Historical Society

A classic book
By J H
An engaging read that reflects the author's experience and passion in the subject. He draws on various disciplines such as psychology and sociology to make the case of improving the museum by adopting a visitor-centred approach. The writing style is clear, simple and accessible, and explains otherwise abstruse academic theories in straightforward terms. This book will stand the test of time because certain theories of human behaviour never change, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The framework for the book (personal context + physical context + social context = the interactive experience) is well presented and defended throughout the book. A must read for any student of museum studies. Oh, and this slim book can be read in a day!

The Zong: A Massacre, the Law and the End of Slavery, by James Walvin

On November 29, 1781, Captain Collingwood of the British ship Zong commanded his crew to throw overboard one-third of his cargo: a shipment of Africans bound for slavery in America. The captain believed his ship was off course, and he feared there was not enough drinking water to last until landfall. This book is the first to examine in detail the deplorable killings on the Zong, the lawsuit that ensued, how the murder of 132 slaves affected debates about slavery, and the way we remember the infamous Zong today.

Historian James Walvin explores all aspects of the Zong’s voyage and the subsequent trial—a case brought to court not for the murder of the slaves but as a suit against the insurers who denied the owners’ claim that their “cargo” had been necessarily jettisoned. The scandalous case prompted wide debate and fueled Britain’s awakening abolition movement. Without the episode of the Zong, Walvin contends, the process of ending the slave trade would have taken an entirely different moral and political trajectory. He concludes with a fascinating discussion of how the case of the Zong, though unique in the history of slave ships, has come to be understood as typical of life on all such ships.

The Horrors of the Black Holocaust
By Paul Gelman
Professor James Walvin has written a shocking book on one episode of many in the annals of slavery, namely about an event which took place towards the end of the eighteenth century. The Black Holocaust was thought about, planned and executed by the greedy, immoral and corrupt merchants of human bodies and its inception and implementation were to be found in Africa and the slave ships which were bound for the West. More than 12 million blacks were deported and enslaved in the USA, while many more millions were sent to other places in the Western Hemisphere to work in the tobacco and sugar plantations. Water was especially important on a slave ship, because of the hard conditions which were a part of any voyage, particularly when those ships were packed and crammed with hundreds of Africans in a crowded, dehydrating and suffocating environment. The final destination of the Zong was Jamaica.
Any slave voyage which started from the Africa entailed horror stories and the story of "The Zong" is just one minor example. The more a slave ship was at sea, the more difficult the human problems on board. In the case described here, Captain Collingwood who was in charge, decided that there would not be enough water on his ship for everyone, so he decided to throw one-third of his human cargo into the sea. In other words, he and others were responsible for the murder of 132 slaves.
As Walvin writes, "the killings took place in small, manageable batches. The men were thrown overboard 'handcuffed and in Irons'", while a further thirty-six Africans died before reaching Jamaica. The Gregson syndicate, which owned the ship, did not see this as a disaster, and it decided to turn the loss of life into a profitable trade by claiming on the ship's insurance for the Africans murdered at sea".
The rest of the book is about this point, particularly about the legal debate brought to court because the insurers denied the owners' claims that their cargo had been necessarily disposed of. The key players in this legal battle were Lord Chief Mansfield and Granville Sharp. The latter (and other abolitionists) campaigned against the crew and the owners of the ship both inside and outside the courts, and tried to bring murder charges against the men involved, while Lord Mansfield, who was considered the father of English commercial law, made comments and a decision which not only entered legal history. The whole affair was brought to public attention on March 6 1782, after the ship's mate, James Kelsall, admitted that he had helped throw the Africans over board, 'by the Captain's order, which he thought was to him a sufficient warrant for doing any possible thing, without considering whether it was criminal or not' '. This report, which made was published by an English news paper, stated that a mass murder had taken place on a Brtish ship and, secondly, the men who committed the killings and the shipowners had not only gotten away with the killings, but had even profited from them by successfully claiming against their insurers.
Professor Walvin used of newly discovered documents and legal transcripts in various archives both in Britain and Jamaica and has written an outstanding, frightening and brilliant book about an episode which was instrumental in opening the eyes of the British public to the realities of the slave ships and the terrible conditions under which those slaves were depoerted and made their way to their respective destinations. To use Walvin's words, " The Zong affair helped spark a seismic shift in public mood". Now slavery was an issue which made its way from the elite to the wider public.
The result of this case and many other similar ones coalesced into a massive public denunciation which caused the slavery issue to be doomed. True, the Act of 1807 did not end the Atlantic slave trade." Nor did it stop Zong-like atrocities against Africans on ships. It was recognized that there were plenty of other Europeans-notably the French, Spanish and Portuguese (to say nothing of Brazilian and Cuban traders)-who were keen to continue slave trading in the Atlantic, whatever the risks". After 1807, 2.8 million Africans were loaded on to Atlantic slave ships, of whom 2.5 Africans survived to landfall in the Americas. Incidents like those which happened with the Zong were to be found in the 1820s and 1830s, because Africans were cargo and not human beings. The irony is that had Gregson not gone to court, the whole story might have never been exposed, not even to legal scrutiny or to the large public. This case helped expose the full complexity and extent of British involvement in the Atlantic slave trade system and was a milestone in ending of this Black Holocaust.

Mass Murder of Slaves at Sea
By Ronald H. Clark
This is quite an interesting and informative book about a horrible mass murder aboard a slave ship in 1781. But it goes beyond the tragic event itself to discuss the later legal case and its eventual impact on the end of slavery in Britain. The author is one of the leading experts on the transatlantic slave trade, whose 30 previous books have provided him with a tremendous background for examining this episode.

The Zong was a slave ship that during a 1781 voyage threw over the side, to their grisly deaths, several hundred slaves, ostensibly because a shortage of water necessitated such action if the remaining Africans and the crew were to survive. To place this event in context, the author offers a very interesting and concise discussion of the transatlantic slave trade. This is the first bonus of the book. The immense profitability of this trade, largely out of Liverpool, was based on first obtaining slaves in Africa, then heading to the Caribbean or America, delivering and selling "the cargo," and then loading up with a valuable commodity (often sugar) for the return voyage. The numbers of Africans thus transported was enormous, exceeding a million. The conditions under which the trade was conducted were horrible for everyone involved; for example, by 1807, 20,000 slave ship crew members had died.

The truly bizarre dimension of the Zong story is that the owners of the Zong demanded that their insurers make good their losses under their insurance policies. The insurers fought this request in court where there was no consideration of the evil of these murders, but rather the issue was whether "the cargo's" loss had been appropriately "jettisoned" within the provisions of the the insurance contracts. Eventually, the shipowners were held to be entitled to 30 pounds payment for each of 130 Africans.

The case was appealed and heard before Lord Chief Justice Mansfield, engaged in a life-long project of upgrading English common law by injecting into it significant concepts from commercial practice. Facing Mansfield was Granville Sharp who had dedicated his life to fighting slavery. Mansfield did not want to upset the commercial practice of the slave trade, even though in the Somerset case (where Sharp was also involved) he had outlawed slavery in England and Wales in 1772. The case was sent back for retrial--but it never happened so that, in effect, the initial decision controlled.

What effect this litigation had on the eventual termination of the British transatlantic slave trade (in 1807)is the final focus of the book. Basically, this horrible event did open the eyes of the British public to the grisly nature of the slave trade and helped eventually to pave the way for its termination. But that development took a very long time. So, there are many bonuses in this fine book and it is well worth the attention of anyone interested in the slave trade and the role of the law in implementing and, eventually, destroying it.

Brilliant review of both the slave trade and abolition

I found this book fascinating. Little did I know that Liverpool was built out of the slave trade. Powerful story of the movement to end a great inhumanity.
